The Merida chart was usually spot on for sizing (except for the Crossway and some of the e-bikes) but we normally would edge towards getting the smaller frame if it was needed as it was easier to make a smaller frame larger.

The only fly in the ointment is that they don't come with many spacers so you may be limited with how much you can raise the bars without looking at the dreaded stem raisers ,which is not really a great idea with carbon forks and it may involve cable changes.

If you can get to sit on a large (and hopefully give it a spin) it should make it easier to decide.

Oh and the 35's were usually fine with external 'guards like the SKS Speedrockers.

All sounds really good - tyre info as expected; and I’d be going with riser bar if required - so spacer issues not a concern. I don’t think - and if anything like I’ve done with large framed bikes previously 😁
 
Just to add that the position will be a bit "racier" than the Carrera.
