Some plonker has dumped a load of builder's rubble on a narrow country lane. Hesiers Hill in Warlingham, Surrey (which is quite steep at almost 20% in places).

The council has already put up signs to alert road users of this. So I went through at a snail's pace. However, a few seconds later there was a loud clank and a BANG!

I stopped to remove a 12" length of metal from between my rear tyre and brake caliper. So now my new ultegra rear caliper is dented and scratched, the rear carbon seat stays are scratched (under the bridge - although it's just the laquer, i hope) and worst of all my rear Michelin Krylion carbon tyre has a 1 inch hole. Those tyres (in 25mm) are harder to come by than a straight polititian:sad:. I had to fix it with a patchwork of bits of inner-tube, glue and my plastic donor card - LOL. Just enough to get home.

I just wish that instead of putting up over 6 signs, the council would have just cleared the rubble away. Especially as what was there would have easily gone on the back of a pickup! I have now asked the council to clear it, as it is a hazzard.

Anyway, rant over. And thanks to all the passing cyclists who asked if I needed a hand;)

Fly tippers should be strung up by the bollocks.

And then shot.

Yep. Somebody dumped a van load of garden trimmings in our office car park, right outside the front door once.

Not a hazard, just plain annoying.

How difficult can it be to simply take that stuff to the tip? Okay, I suspect some of it is people making money out of it (builders charging a customer for clearance and then dumping) so they will lways fly tip but in some cases its people who have vans or pickups that the man at the tip wont allow entry - all they need to do is phone the council, there is normally a way to get an exemption that proves its your own vehicle and therefore you are dumping household waste.

It seems to be getting more and more common unfortunately. It's not unusual to find things like old bathroom suites and fridges at the side of the road.

The trouble is most tips will not take commercial waste and that includes all building waste and garden waste and if you have a trailer in my area it has to be no bigger than a 4 x 3 box or you are classed as trade so when I go down my country lanes it’s all there to see.
We also have a few pikey that are tree surgeons and in the evening their trucks are full up and in the morning empty !!!, if the tips were made it easier access to all trades I’m sure 80% of fly tipping would stop.

It's quite depressing. Since I started cycling and exploring the local bridleways I've seen a fair amount of it. You head off down one and someones obviously just backed a van up and emptied aload of crap out.

Worst mess I've seen was a huge pile of cable insulation, all stripped of the copper, probably sold as scrap. Would love to see some of the culprits have it dumped in their own front yards, or tbh, living rooms.

Had some flooding here, iirc late winter. Amazing how many mattresses turned up out of nowhere after the flood water receeded.

Agree. I see fly tipping just about every time I go out, they do it in the same places again and again. They talk about bringing in new laws but that's not the problem. The problem is that they don't bother a stuff enforcing the laws they already have! If it takes a bit of effort to enforce a law the council and the police don't want to know.

Traders have to pay to dispose waste, and the amount is increasing due to the landfill tax escalator and various other requirements. This, coupled with poorly resourced/ non-existent waste enforcement by councils has led to an explosion in fly-tipping.

Last year we had 8 binbags of rubbish dumped in a field on my boss's land. His son went through them and found envelopes with an address on. He put all the rubbish in a trailer, drove to the house, and dumped it all on the fella's front lawn!!
