I'd second the recommendation for Brompton Junction. Lots of choice from stock, and I suspect they may be able to offer shorter lead-times on custom builds too. Plus the cafe has a great treacle tart. :-)

At 17 stone (110kg), I would suggest a Dahon or Tern. I tried the brompton's but didn't rate the ride over the 20" wheels of the Dahon. The fold however of the Bromton is second to none.
It came down to which was most important to me and that was the time spent riding the bike.

Don't get one. At just over a mile at each end its a bit of hassle doing 4 fold/unfold per journey and you, presumably, wish to lose weight. Get some running shoes. Treat the Overground as a rest stop and time to dream on what the spend the £800 on and looking for another job further away ...

Bromptons are too good for short commuting

It's not really about fat loss (body fat isn't terrible, still carrying a lot of muscle). The reason for the bike over the walk/ run is:
a) Have bad knees (motorbike crash)
b) in summer will be looking to get off the sweaty metal tubes earlier & enjoy some of the countryside!

Planning to pop into the shops this weekend and see what they have! Many thanks for the ideas so far!

If your taking it on trains I think some companies only allow 16 inch wheels at peak times. Rules out Dahons but Brompton OK.

I honestly dont know if that rule still exists or if anyone ever checks.

So, Brompton all purchased (S2L). This morning's journey I've already saved 20 mins!
