The Glue that binds us together.
Over the summer months i seem to have put on a bit of weight, The beginning of the year i was just over 10 stone, i thought if i put a small amount on it may help to give me more power, Don't think that worked i seem to be struggling a bit on the hills half way through the summer, I always started of with a bowl of porridge before a ride. Then after 30+ miles would stop for a breakfast, that could be anything from poached eggs on toast, to a full blown fry up. Any way i went up to 11 stone 13lbs and it was all around my waist. Over the last month i have cut out any breakfast that includes the porridge before the ride, we still do the same distances and i don't feel i need anything before the ride, i don't feel i am suffering in anyway at all. i do always have a good sized meal in the evening and that sustains me through the following morning, While on the ride i will take 1 gel 1 energy bar and 6 jelly babies, Today i eat the energy bar and the jelly babies on a 40 mile ride and the gel i bought back home. I do drink plenty of water on the ride.

I ain't no racer (to old for that) but i do put the miles in, have lost 7lbs in the last couple of weeks so on the road to recovery ^_^. Going to try to get down to 10 stone and see how i feel. I have also cut out all chocolate, the one thing i don't want to give up is my beer.
So do we really need the porridge or any cereal before a ride?

I dont eat anything for a 40 mile ride before or during, more than that and I take something just to stop me keeling over, although having broken my toe yesterday im wondering when & if I can ride tomorrow and if I cant I wont be eating nought till I can. I'm with you on the beer though.

I don't think it's a case of eating too much, just the wrong things. Don't know if you're a beer drinker but that can pile on the pounds. If you can just eat, or cut out, less sugar and oil/fat that should be all that's required. Plus it's not a good idea to eat after six in the evening.

You do need the porridge in the morning. Try eating an egg too, that will help keep the hunger at bay for a while.

For 30 miles+ I used to eat a bowl of muesli before for breakfast, then during a flapjack, cereal bar and one bottle half filled with orange juice. However now I just have the breakfast and a single cereal bar, no juice or flapjack. That will do me up to about 70 miles.

During the week I cycle up to 24 miles on an evening after work, having eaten no more than a small sandwich, an apple and a banana the whole day ( I don't do breakfast midweek) and only drinking water. It doesn't seem to have any effect but doubt I could do 70 or even 40 on this.

What I am finding annoying though is getting my cereal bars in supermarkets. I go for the low fat, high carbohydrate (of which about 1/3rd sugar) ones. But increasingly everything appears to be heading towards the 99 calorie market, but they're all bound with fat and there is less carbohydrate of which mostly is sugar.

Drink more water. Do not eat anything after 6 PM and cut something out that you know you should not be eating. You will soon get results if you stick to it.

Why not eat anything after 6pm? On the continent, most people eat around 8pm and they are not fatter than over here, in fact, most are slimmer so I don't see the logic in that.

I don't leave the house without porridge (or cereal if pushed for time), whether cycling or not. But then I try not to eat anything else solid for 3 hours (I mostly fail though, when cycling a skinny latte would usually be drunk before the time is up)!

You body cannot break down the food as you are mostly inactive after 6pm.

It is more likely to be about eating all the wrong foods, like Mac_Donalds and other crap food. If you eat the right ingredients, eating after 6pm won't do any harm. I never eat before 6pm due to work.

I should be a right FB then, as I rarely eat my main meal before about 8pm.. Sometimes it's because of work, other times by choice. Given that it is now after 5pm and the chicken I am intending to roast is still sitting in the fridge, it looks like it will be nearer 8pm again. Too many disciplined and organised people on here!
