I went to a small boarding school, aged eight. The school cook must have been on a very tight budget. There were a whole lot of foods that I solemnly swore I would never suffer again once I had served my sentence...

Sago
Semolina
Tapioca
Cold stewed fruit
Pig's liver, with most of the internal plumbing intact
Heart
Sweetbreads
Stork margarine
Camp coffee

Leaving food on your plate was punishable by death.

It was quite a happy little place otherwise.

Edit: I forgot to mention the sour milk, no kidding!

No super wagon wheels, my mum worked somewhere connected to the factory, and she used to buy the reject ones in a paper bag for 2p each I think. And the reason they were reject..... Because they had been double coated with chocolate. The proper ones in shops have never lived up to those reject ones!

A few pages back I mentioned the Alpine pop man....

I remember the Sunblest van coming round on a Saturday until the mid 80's.
When I started going to pubs in Ellesmere Port the Kershaws fish man would come in, in his white coat, usually after 9pm with a tray around his neck selling cockles, prawns etc, drowned in vinegar they were great! Not sure food hygiene was paramount though!

But the third pint bottles had to be full fat AND at room temperature or slightly higher...

Don't complain about "room temperature" For some reason Australia did the free milk thing, so on February mornings when the temperature rose above 35, it wasn't really milk any more

And then there were the bag of dead kittens. My mother theorised that a random person had meant them to be found by young students and given good homes, but by the time they were found ..... :sun::thumbsdown:
