I think the key there is weight loss, or rather avoiding weight gain, not sugar consumption. I'm sure most know that becoming overweight means that your body loses sensitivity to insulin. I was challenging the presumption that sugar consumption on its own causes diabetes - it doesn't, and it's one of those urban myths that ought to be challenged.

It even says so in the article -

Jemma Edwards, a care adviser for Diabetes UK, said: "It is very unlikely that drinking more sugar-sweetened beverages alone increases the risk of developing diabetes.

"However, consuming sugary drinks could lead to weight gain, and we know that being over-weight and a lack of physical activity are risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes."

+1

OT, I know, but my daughter, who has Type 1 diabetes, gets really upset at the implication that diabetes is self-inflicted by consuming too much sugar.

On topic again, regular exercise in itself will raise your base metabolic rate which will assist with weight loss. I manage a 9-mile morning commute on just a glass of fruit juice, but I do snack regularly throughout the day before heading home again. The one problem I have is that I sometimes fail to take in enough fluid during the day - and this is important for recovery.

Don't expect to ride a full week too often...... it's hard doing 20 miles each way..... When I raced, I'd ride the 20 miles each way in an hour (yes - and less) but it would be rare that I could manage a full week of that (and being in my early 20's)...... it would give me heavy legs for weekend racing....

Take it easy and build up - that's a long way each day....

fair point and my legs were certainly heavy today after the 2 days in a row. Longer term I'd imagine the full 5 days as being a better weather, occasional, thing. I envisage 3-4 per week on a regular basis, maybe dropping to 2-3 in Winter. However, though I'm on the bike for approx 3.5hrs, in a day, at present, my actual effort input time is a lot less. I reckon I'm exerting myself aerobically for no more than 2.25 of those hrs. My first goal is to manage to pedal all the way, barring the steeper descents as I hit 28mph just coasting on them. I don't really expect to take on the full 5 days until I've lost enough weight and improved my fitness and stamina enough. Most of what I've done so far was just proving to myself it was achievable. But in fairness if I was told someone of my age was doing 10-15 hours of aerobic exercise a week, I wouldn't think of that as excessive.

One big positive is the route, compared to the commuting horror stories on here, it's a walk in the park. Generally quiet, no ridiculous hills(though they're tough enough for me right now:biggrin:) and long stretches where I see few cars but plenty of open fields. I really don't think I could do this distance in heavy traffic. It's 2 miles longer than need be to avoid a main road as it is.
