I work with a bloke who is an assistance ref in the Barclays Premiership and he asked a good trivia question a while ago.

"What is the maximum number of cards that a referee can show in a professional football match and the match still continue".

Any guesses...?

Barnet,
I think it is something like 22 yellow cards, one for each player, that could be 28 if the subs are booked as well, plus 7 more second yellow cards and then 7 red cards as the game has to be stopped when one team gets down to 7 players. So 42 in total. Am I right?

What about the touchline staff? Do they get shown a card as such?

If you exclude them then is it 34 (all players (22) yellow, all subs (6) yellow, 6 red cards (3 on each team))?

Going on from Paulus:

1 yellow card all round - 28

Then teams to get down to 8 vs 8: 6 more yellow followed by red cards therefore 40?? (as in - for the play not to stop)...
