I treated myself to a Kilo of Illy coffee beans at Christmas from Tesco for just over a tenner.

Use a Bialetti to brew and drink a lage mug full in the morning and an hour or so before bed with a touch of sugar and teaspoon of Coffee Mate .

It never effects my sleeping.

Unfortunately our espresso machine died recently- 3rd one in 7 years; diagnosis - hardened arteries caused by London's water. Not guilty of negligence, only use filter water and regularly descaled.

Does any one have a view on Nespresso?

Here's a portrait I took in 2008 of one of my Palestinian customers with the ubiquitous cup of coffee. I'm rather proud of this simple picture:

I'm a total coffee addict... If I go a day without I get the worst headaches ever! Not a fan of instant, but got used to because of tea drinking friends that just don't make the effort! I'll normally have a splash of milk, but if theres only cream available I'll take it black with half a spoon of sugar.

We've had a Nespresso for a couple of years, it works very well, producing excellent coffee. A couple of friends have got themselves machines after trying ours a few times. The coffee it makes is very good, smooth with an excellent crema and a wide variety of flavours which are actually different.

The only downside is that it's a bit of a pain not being able to pop into Tescos for new pods the online ordering is painless and the prices haven't gone up as I thought they might with the restricted supply chain. The pods cost around 25p - 35p each, depending on what coffee you get, and I've made thousands of cups, so saving £2 a time over going down to the local coffee shop means it's more than paid for itself.

IMO.

Never drink instant, except at work. And even then I prefer to use a filter machine if there is one. At home we grind the beans and use a stovetop expresso maker, which we usually mix with hot milk, half and half. Sometimes I have it black, but not often except at work. Work coffee is always black. Tea is for girls and ponces.

I have shop coffee (a local independent coffee shop that does very cheap - £1.30 - and very good coffee) twice a day.

And my own brewed stuff at weekends.

I love coffee but not the starbucks stuff which is way too strong, stupidly strong, which I've never understood or liked. I like my coffee to have a strong taste but not to give me the jitters after one cup.

...and another thing... I am a total coffee fiend, but when out and about (e.g. cafe while cycling, National Trust property, greasy spoon, etc) I always have tea, because I find that the filter coffee served in such establishments is always luke warm, and I have to have hot coffee.

I only have one cup of coffee per day and that is in the mornings when at work. I'm not an expert and have not tried all the different brands of coffee but IMO the one that is way above the rest for taste and smell is Trung Nguyen from Vietnam.

I bought my son one for Christmas 2009, Geoffrey - he disappeared abroad for six months and I was able to give it a reasonable 'road test'. I think they are quite good actually. Plenty of special flavours around and the milk warmer / frother was a nice touch. Bit noisy - but that's consistent. I have mentioned before on here that the basement in Selfridges is a good place to try a variety of flavours and see the machinery in operation (aka free coffee! ) and that the communications and backup is very good. Generally one would settle on a preference, or two, from the flavours available.

Then he came back and I got back into the habit of Bialetti again - quantity + but doesn't 'quite' nail the flavour in the same way - but I'm easy about that anyway.

Norm - your money saving calculation is splendid.

But mostly, the brown water and milky bubbles is always tastier in decent company.

2 cups per day, one early, one late. Strong fresh ground beans with no milk currently using Sainsburys Continental blend.

Weak coffee and instant becomes undrinkable and unthinkable once you've been weaned onto the real McCoy.
