ford fiesta engine warning light

i have recently bought a ford fiesta flame 04reg 1.4 petrol on monday and then monday evening the engine warning light came on and stayed on (from turning on engine).

i have been out again today and the light hasn't come on again.

the car was serviced and MOT'ed before i picked the ford up from Jennings.

should i take it back to jennings?

Last time I saw an engine warning light I ended up sat roadside on a saturday night for six hours.

Do you really need to ask if you should have it checked?

I'd be on the phone first thing in the morning. They can use their diagnostic gear to check it over.

yes, please get it checked out. Their diagnostic gear should be able to diagnose the error - I jst wonder whether it can detect 'previous'/intermittent errors as per your description. It probably can, I guess.

If you know the car, then ignore it - if not garage, especially diesel.

My Nissan Primera PETROL throws the MIL light now and again at 50 mph, gas pedal off, cruising, for no reason - I have the secret hand shake (pedal press) technique to clear it - I know the car very well and it runs smooth, I suspect an over keen sensor on the exhaust system - Nissan gave my model extra sensors to get the lot in the CO2 range. That said, it flies the MOT.

If you aren't sure of the car's history, then get a diagnostic.

PS if the light detects a fault it stays on the whole journey. If it's off next time then keep an eye on it. It can take 3 or more journeys to clear if an intermittent fault.

Seriously though, get it checked out where you bought it. Most engine management ECU's store fault codes when they occur, then the diagnostic machine can read them when it is connected. So even though the 'fault' may not be present when they check, the machine should read the history and hopefully point in one direction.
I was assuming that Jennings was a Ford main agent as I was typing this, but a quick Google has proved that is the case.

might be something as simple as "lost comms from the airflow sensor" (thats a loose plug) for about £10 you can get a diagnostic code reader from halfrauds. the interwebby has lists of the codes and the meanings .

I had a Focus and the light was on all the time , turned out it was a faulty sensor in the exhaust, as usual you could not change the sensor without changing half the exhaust so took the bulb out and had 5 years of happy motoring.

went into Jennings this morning and they have booked it in for tomorrow for it to be checked out.

just got back from Jennings, they reconfigured the PCM.

i had to google what it was lol

Got an engine management light on my Merc about 2 years ago. The code said it was a lambda or oxygen sensor in the exhaust, so I swapped it out for a brand new Bosch one, had the code reset and it came back on about 3 days later. I've ignored it since, and it sails through the MOT.
