Hi again folks!
I'm trying to come up with some different ideas for my forum rides and this is one of them ...
There was some discussion on last weekend's forum ride about opting for a pub lunch on the next one. It so happens that I need to check out a local pub for possible use in the summer for a family wedding party, so I thought I'd take us up there on this ride.
The Hare & Hounds is in a fantastic hilltop location with panoramic views - website link & Streetview link. Pan the Streetview picture round and you will see what I mean.
The thing is, the pub is only a couple of miles out of Hebden Bridge, so we need to go out in a loop and come back to it for our stop. I thought about making the lunch stop at the halfway point but the whole ride is only going to be 47 miles and I think it would be too early if we did that.
So, what I'm proposing is to do a 24 mile loop which takes us out over the hills through Colden, Jack Bridge and Blackshaw Head...
... down the Long Causeway to the fringes of Burnley ...
... pick up bromptonfb on his trusty fixed-wheel bike and head back through Todmorden, do a little diversion though Lumbutts and Mankinholes to break the monotony of the local A-roads ...
... then whizz back to Hebden Bridge where we can stop off for coffee (& cake?). If the weather is nice, perhaps we can park up by the river again ...
... and then continue to Mytholmroyd to tackle the famous Cragg Vale climb, meander over some lovely hilltop lanes with views stretching in some directions beyond Bradford, Leeds and York ...
... and return to Hebden Bridge to climb to the pub by the easiest of the available routes.
After the pub stop, the most direct return ride is downhill all the way to the town, though we would have the option of adding a few miles on if the weather were nice and we had the time, energy and inclination to do that!
The whole ride will be 47 miles, but if anybody fancies coming along for just the second half, you could meet us in Hebden Bridge when we return for our coffee stop. You would miss out 24 miles of riding including a big climb.
Anybody who is in a hurry to get away or who doesn't fancy the pub lunch, could leave us on the second return to Hebden Bridge after about 43 miles (or 19 if the first loop had been missed out).
Anybody coming from the Burnley direction could meet up with bromptonfb and we could pick you up on the A646 at Walk Mill.
Usual ride ethos - an easy sociable pace, and lots of chatting, with relaxed stops at the cafe and pub. Nobody will be left behind but if anyone wants to climb ahead of the slower riders, feel free, just wait at the summits for me and the rest of the rear guard!
It will be slow, slow, slow. Don't come along and complain about it being slow. IT WILL BE SLOW! (We won't be riding quickly ...
)
Meet at Market Place car park, Hebden Bridge 09:15, set off at 09:30, Walk Mill on A646 at about 10:30, back at the car park Hebden Bridge (NB *** Only if you tell us that you are going to be there waiting for us! ***) at about 11:30, leave HB after coffee 12:00 ish, back to Hebden Bridge again about 13:45, pub lunch at about 14:00, back to car park for last time about 15:00.
Map showing HB car parks.
The centre of Hebden Bridge is now pedestrianised and there is a one-way system. To get to the car park turn right up Commercial Street as you come into HB from the Halifax direction, second left after about 100 yards by the White Lion. Follow that road round over the river. The car park is then on your right.
If you are coming from the Todmorden direction, turn left down Old Gate (one way street) at the end of Market Street, just after the Inn on the Bridge on your left. Follow the road round past the Hole in t'Wall. The car park is straight ahead on the right.
If anybody decides to turn up announced (it has happened before) make sure that you get to Market Place car park in good time because we won't be hanging about once all those officially riding have gathered!
Post below if you would like your name added to the list!
