Stopped of at Sainsburys' local near me this morning and my lock jammed (my fault.. The bit where the cable clicks in moved in the plastic yesterday but I thought I had fixed it... apparently not....)

Anyway another customer heard my 'Light hearted banter' :cursing: with the lock and offered to help... he drove home and came back within 10 minutes with a pair of heavy duty garden pruners and a junior hacksaw..... within 1 minute it was free....

It was only my 'Cafe/Shop' cable-lock for 5 minute stops but the ease with which it was cut through was frightening:eek:... I thought it was a reasonable one..... I suppose I ought to carry the Kryptonite D-lock more....

Anyway I offered him a tenner but he wouldn't take it....

Whilst I was waiting a woman asked if I was cycling far... I replied 8 miles to work....her reply? In this weather? you must be mad....... ('this' weather being warm and sunny:rolleyes:)

Arrived at work in plenty of time....

I have one of those cable locks and think of it as more of a Anti walk away lock, as in it just stops opportunists walking away with the bike, whereas a thief armed with cutters will have it away in seconds.

At the moment my local Sainsburys is selling Mini Soreen Banana flavoured loaves individual wrapped, they are great for sticking in the pocket on rides and not as sticky and teeth binding as the std Soreen loaf.

It normally only gets (sorry should be past tense.... got) used for nipping to the shops.... but may have to rethink as lot of 'Scrap-men' about with tools and it wasn't even proper croppers... just a heavy duty garden pruner.....

not much of a security device if it can be released using a hacksaw/pruners after 1 minute.

Absolutely agree.... I've got a Kryptonite with the £800 insurance (if they leave the cut lock) but too heavy to carry everywhere.... But saying that I've locked my Defy up at Cafe's with a cable lock... next to rows and rows of Pinarello's etc all unlocked..... I wouldn't even think about doing that....

Have to say, having seen what an angle grinder does to a U-bolt, I'm certain there's simply no security you can use that will prevent a half-way equipped thief from walking off with your nearest & dearest in a matter of seconds. I for one would not leave a bike with any obvious resale value locked up in a public place for any length of time.

I cut Mrs V's old D lock (cheap one) with a pair of bolt croppers borrowed from work

A good 13mm chain and padlock is the best. Extremely hard to crop and harder to grind than a d-lock. Heavy though.

D lock seems the best compromise. BUT I cut one of the Kryptonite New York ones up when the lock part bust. A big % of the shackle is rubbery coating stuff! Bit of a con making it look bigger than it is, and providing a nice grip for some bolt cutters! I moved on to Abus Granit one and they have more metal substance to the shackle.

Cable locks are a joke, you can cut most of them with a pair of garden secateurs and some forearm.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I never leave my bike at the shops and i am wary on a club run .
The only place the bike is left "unattended " is in the works bike shed with a d and cable lock is a padlocked shed or at home in a double locked secure area with a ground anchor .
Not ideal for those who use their bikes for more utility cycling in know
I do like the look of those chains that look like a belt or i could install a d - lock carrier on the bike if i were to use it regularly as a shopper.

Yep, all you can do is make it harder to steal your bike than the ones around it. A Sold Secure Motorcycle Gold lock will survive a 5-minute attack using anything short of an angle-grinder, and the only locks that pass that test are 2Kg+ D-locks (I have the Abus Granit 54) or a 13mm hardened steel chain with matching padlock, which will also weigh 2Kg+ in anything over a metre in length.

It only gets left on a cable lock for 5 mins at the most.... D lock and cable round front wheel if I leave it in Burton town centre .... At work it is indoors 2 foot away and hiding:ph34r:.....

Never going to leave it longer than a minute or 2 on a cable again!!!!!

I bought a bike lock in Poundland - mind you, it was only because I was on a weekend break with my mum and she was panicking that someone would steal her case while we were on the train. I used it to secure her suitcase to the luggage rack, making it less likely to be the one that got pinched if a thief leapt off the train at a station stop. Not the advertised use, but it placated my 75 year-old mother, so a pound well spent!
