Hi all,

I am using a Carrera TDF to upgrade/learn about all things bike. A bit like many years ago when I would take my MK1 Escort apart sometimes to repair sometimes for fun and learning.

Today I discovered the difference between freewheel and cassette. My question is I have a 7 speed freewheel back wheel. The gap on the drop outs is 130mm. Can I buy a 10 speed cassette rear wheel to fit straight in?

I am changing the chainset to a 48/34 and bottom bracket from a taper seat to the appropriate BB then derailleurs probably

Many more questions to come over the weeks ahead.

Thanks

Yes you can, but this won't be a cheap change. New wheels, chainset, shifters etc.

Hi Fossyant,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I guessed it will cost but it is a slow burn project so no problem. I want it to be about learning. Just to confirm, from other things I have read 130mm between the drop outs is the norm for modern bikes?

130mm for rear is usually for rim brakes. 135mm for disc brakes setups
