Will any of them be allowed to escape the peloton?

"The 196 prisoners will cycle in a pack and breakaway sprints will not be allowed. "

I wonder how they were selected from the prison population?

I predict a small film. Phillipe Noiret as the prison governer. Jean Reno as the washed-up former pro, Emmanuelle Beart as his lover, Eric Cantona as the wily prison guard who interposes himself between them, John Malkovich as the maverick shopkeeper supplying the riders with hallucinogenic flapjack, and none other than Marcello Mazzarella wearing a stupefyingly stylish leg bandage giving up certain victory when he stops to apply a freshly talced inner tube to his rival's wheel...

I appreciate why the authorities are organizing this, but it seems odd that most of us would pay good money to do this, while the ne'er do wells get it for gratis.

Stowaway on a France-bound lorry then commit a crime in France. According to the DM thousands of people do it in reverse ;)

Well, they get food and accommodation for gratis as well, whereas we all have to pay for them, but probably don't count themselves lucky.. (I remember that point being made once on telly in a programme about psychology - a man can have warmth, food, shelter, books, TV, education etc, and yet are still felt to be 'suffering' because they are in prison, because we mostly attach so much importance to being able to go about as we please.)

Sorry, but if I were one of these prisoners, I would escape.

Simple...pretend to be really suffering, refuse to give up etc, so you are dropped. Then turn your bike downhill and fleeeee

And you don't think, just possibly, the guards might be wise to that trick?

You've forgotten the arrogant, drug fiend named Laurent Brasfort who continually gets away and wails of false accusations. He gets caught in the end after some dubious detective work on the part of a national newspaper.

Just seen in our local rag that the black and white striped peleton passes past us tomorrow! No times are given (makes sense I guess!) but I'll keep an eye out and hope to get a photo or two!
