There are a fair number of motorway type N roads which do not allow bikes but they will be fairly obvious

Me too - in Geneva I followed green signposts onto what looked like a dual carriageway. But after the swiss-french border, same road, but the signs were now blue!

Scrambled down a bank to a normal road before the motorway joined the main road between Lyon & Milan.

Been there, done that... glad to see I've not been the only person to fall foul of the cunning 'Geneva road sign colour switch'!
