Reed, actually drove the truck on the circuit
I used to have a copy of Overdrive magazine that had an article on the truckers that helped with the making of the film - particularly the desert scene
However, he drove it (a GMC General), as the Pace Truck. not in the race, hence the 'normal' clothing
