Thanks again Tim for taking me to the station. Just at my local kebab shop right now consoling myself about not being able to complete the ride.

Maybe next time!
No need to worry about it. I've dipped on two night rides already. I'm sure you are in far better shape than I was!

Edit: Sorry, I'm not pretending to be Tim. Those were just some words of encouragement from a fellow sufferer.

Thanks @Flying Dodo for leading us so effectively. Very smoothly done! I write this sat on a train speeding it's way back to The Smoke having bailed at the half way stop. Part of me wishes I'd carried on, but another part of me (the stomach mostly) clearly thinks getting home to bed is the best course of action. Enjoy the rest of the ride!

Another DNF here too, due to migraine. Currently at Horsham train station. Lots of cancellations due to shortage of train crew.

Sorry tonight was tough, @RoubaixCube. If it's any consolation, I bailed to a train station on my very first FNRttC after walking a lot of hills. Keep riding - it does get easier with practice and experience. Although... heads up... the Brighton ride next month takes much the same route as far as the halfway stop.

Excellent night. SMRbtH rapidly curtailed due to relentless crosswind, did not fancy four hours of that. Went to Worthing station, just missed one train & next (30 mins later) cancelled. Went onto Littlehampton, next Pompey train was on the platform, made it OK. Will be home about noon. More later...

Back home safely, cuppa in hand (first of a few I suspect).

Great route !!! Iddly diddly little country lanes that probably wouldn't have been any busier if we'd done the route in the middle of the day. More uppy downies than I was expecting but that meant lots of glorious free-wheeling.

Rain threatened far worse than it ever delivered, and both times I put my waterproof on it eased almost immediately. It was mild throughout and the headwind was only mildly irritating briefly on couple of occasions. Sun appeared as we approached journey's end, which was just about perfect.

Bread pudding was a hit, I just wished I'd had the sense to order two bits as soon as I walked in.

Breakfast was bang on, only a shame I couldn't take advantage of the spare food as I had to scoot home to get mini-h into Kingston for his cycling club session. (And on the train on the way home I got a call to say he was bailing out 'cos he has too much revision to do.)

Tim O. Top man !!! A selfless act, well done. Was a train found ? You'll have to make the Brighton ride now, and you should be excused all duties.

As for the trivia quiz posed outside the pub, I have the answers, though I confess to having had to look two of the three up.

(What three country's names do not contain any of the letters in "mackerel" ?)

Adam, I owe you a quid.
Nick and John whom I caught the train with; John, I owe you 25p and Nick, I owe you £1.25. To be settled on the Brighton ride. I hope you both got home without problem.

Great fun all round. Really looking forward to the Brighton run now.

Should have filled my pockets with bacon and hash browns before departing Shoreham- would have sustained me though the train cancellations. Fortunately I had a few old fluffy jelly babies in a pocket...

Home now, treating the grumbly knee with ibulieve, then will give serious consideration to my "pre-bedtime lunch".
I really loved the experience of my first FNRttC - many thanks again to Adam and everyone else who did such a sterling job, and a huge apology to Kim for my alarming swerve!

Hope to see you all again next month!

Aha, so you managed to get home without any completely insane train issues! :okay:

As we arrived at East Croydon, the hourly Gatwick train was just arriving and leaving the platform, it was an almost perfectly bad arrival time. They then promptly cancelled the next one, so if that had been the only available route, a two hour wait would have ensued ! Luckily another train proved to be useful.

After eight years of a perfect record of finishing every FNRttC, my last three have all been DNFs or DNSs !

Does anyone have a GPX record of the route? I'm curious to see where Adam chose to go, and see how badly wrong my route guesswork was.

Thanks for a great night ride. It was nice to all be able to get into the cabin at the same time, and the breakfast at Shoreham was fantastic and most welcome. To finish the ride it was along the coast to Littlehampton, then back over the downs to Midhurst and a welcome bath. Thanks again all.

I did promise you a destination ride, and I think the airport and their sumptuous breakfast buffet ticked all the boxes! Planning the ride is the easy part of course - it's the actual carrying out of it that's the unknown, due to so many variable factors.

The actual route was worked out nearly a year ago. After remembering the iconic terminal building from my flying days, it was just a question of using bikehike to sort out the least hilly yet scenic route, which Rebecca and I then test rode last July. Since then I went over a few parallel roads south, and then rejected them due to safety issues. The only change which I'd mentioned to a few of you was having to ditch going through Leigh due to a bridge replacement from this week, which is a shame as the road conditions around there are far better.

It was all rather scenic once out of London.

Even though I've led probably 100+ rides, those tend to be for no more than 25 riders, so the forward thinking about gauging how fast to go, when to stop etc increases exponentially with more riders who are on a wider range of bikes, with differing abilities.

Having done enough TEC duties myself, it really is a privilege to have noble gents like @Tim Hall and @TimO at the back. Between them, they can magic any machine back to life, and they excelled, especially with @TimO giving up his ride to provide escort duties and @Tim Hall getting @jiberjaber mobile again. I must also thank people who helped out with the way making which makes the ride so much easier. And of course our Steward in Chief, @mmmmartin complete with radio.

Brighton next month won't be quite the same thing though.
