i need to be in cambridge on saturday for sunday's audax. i could make a little detour to southend, leave home at six, be in southend around nine, say hello to the cc folk enjoying extended breakfast, then go to cambridge. sleep over at friends', do the audax and pootle back to london. sounds like a very possible plan.

That will get you to about 400-450km over two days. Well within your range I am sure!

I'm wondering why he doesn't go via Birmingham and make a proper day out of it!

I did draw a crescent moon, thinking it would be appropriate. And then I drew a circle, which was nice, but not as nice and not as distinctive as the star.

To be honest I was thinking more of a ride such as the one we anticipate on Friday, with a clear sky, and stars by the thousand, inspired, in part, by Adrian's phone with it's application that identifies stars and planets for you.

"And a star to steer her by"

<goes off to bugger up a bit of Masefield>

Sporting a back full of splatter splatter marks, wannabe riders, sheathed in Bluemels and Zefal, will gasp - "A PROPER cyclist!"
A proper cyclist is 'where the crud is up the back and in the air,
not encased in plastic - way down there.'

A proper cyclist is
.......surely one who is still awake at 2.25am the day of the ride

before you accuse me of smugness, my body clock is still out by 9 hours as I have just returned from the US. Plus I have been carbo loading on Guiness since 5.30pm..See you later today and please nudge me if I look like I am falling asleep.

Although I don't have Andrij's siderophobia, I think the jersey would be better in white rather than black. As in opposites - night = day.

I do not have a fear of cider! Come on one of the Lewisham rides in Kent that stops at the Golding Hop and I'll prove it to you. ;)

*looks again*

Oh. Well, not a fear, more a strong dislike, and only for red stars.

Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows;

fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping and the

waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city. Fog on the Essex marshes, fog

on the Kentish heights. Fog creeping into the cabooses of collier-brigs; fog

lying out on the yards and hovering in the rigging of great ships; fog drooping

on the gunwales of barges and small boats. Fog in the eyes and throats of

ancient Greenwich pensioners, wheezing by the firesides of their wards; fog in

the stem and bowl of the afternoon pipe of the wrathful skipper, down in his

close cabin; fog cruelly pinching the toes and fingers of his shivering little

'prentice boy on deck. Chance people on the bridges peeping over the parapets

into a nether sky of fog, with fog all round them, as if they were up in a

balloon and hanging in the misty clouds.

thermal socks, shoes, overshoes. Shorts and long bib whatnots over. Wooly vest, thermal vest, warm cycling top. Gloves. Thinsulate hat.

if it's in wool then it has to be in a dark colour - the muck thrown up off the road will never come out, even if your granny handwashes it using those big blocks of soap and a wooden washboard.

As for daytime running, all I can say is that it's shapes that people see as much as colour. Horizontal bands, sharp edges, geometric patterns, all good.

I was just thinking during the daytime in the summer, a white jersey would reflect more heat - I've suffered when wearing black tops before. I guess if it's black, it'll be for night time use only!

You're right about getting mucky though - for User10571's last Whitstable ride, I had a mainly white lycra jersey on, and I had to do a LOT of scrubbing to get that clean again.

Brown is obviously the way to go then - forget black. Or sage green perhaps, something trendsetting. Otherwise, plain ones according to 'experience'... like 1st dan , 2nd dan at karate etc. Progress can be made through the colours until - A Black One. Then comes the addition of white bands to indicate experience and nominal seniority.

So, you will kick off with a white jersey Simon, as there will be no 'black' space left, and the rest will fall into place nicely. Additional stars can be awarded (or removed) according to principles of helpfulness or discipline. (At this point I would suggest that Adrian has the 'defrockers' job as a shoo-in).

There might be the odd jersey available for those untrained measles who insist on infecting the rides from time to time...
