Impressed by the quality of lighting on the Southend ride I’ve decided to get myself a proper front lamp for night riding. (I know fresh batteries in my CatEye would be OK, but my night vision gets no better as the years and miles pass by.)

My LBS suggested some 150-lumen rechargeables, but these things fade after 2-3 hours use.

Bright Young Things, what do you have on your bars?

A B&M Cyo powered by a Shimano dyno-hub, with a Blackburn Quadrant as backup / flashing light for town.

Which cateye?

I use a hope vision 1 and many other people do. There are all manner of LED torches and things better than this you can bodge up.

Take a look at the last page or so of the Dun Run II thread in this section sj - that should give you a clue! ;)

Met Origamist last week. He said he was deffo and up for a beer.

That was before he was allocated Short Straw Lane. I think the beer will clinch it, though...

You'll probably get lot's of opinions, but the majority will probably say the Hope Vision 1.

I use just the one and is more than enough for the night rides.

+1 too. I went on the Brighton ride in July with just my commuting cateye on the front, bit scary at 2 in the morning on a country lane so bought a Hope Vision1 almost as soon as I got back. So far I've used it solely for FNRttCs but may use it for commuting this winter (leave £70 worth of light in the carpark or faff about detaching it and taking it to my desk???)

I've got twin Hope Vision 1's on my trike.
One to light up where each front wheel goes ......

In town, I'll run them on a 1 setting.
Once in the stick, I run them on the 2 setting.
If/when the batteies get low, they stop working but will still run for a few hours on the 1 setting.
I then swop the batteries at the next stop.

Last Friday's light relief...

Don't bother clicking on this sj - I see you posted on the thread already! Sorry, been dipping in and out while trying to work...losing track of things - must give up this social lark at once.

Here for rides.
Lights = AyUp. I like riding up behind the Hope boys'n'girls and then turning my second AyUp on to watch their shadows deeply cast across the pale glow of their Hopes. (Seriously Hopes are good bang for the buck but AyUps imo are more versatile)

Carradice = Happy to pack/bring a Bara Brith for them as eats it. I like Bara Brith much as I like small children. Very nice but I couldn't eat a whole one.

Rack = My Tubus Fly still hasn't arrived (tis now on back order)

Bike = Next year I am going to ride an £80 full suspension supermarket BSO on an FNRttC to Brighton, secure it to the seafroint railings with a Tesco combination lock, and leave it there. Could I do next years Martlets ride very slowly on me Strida do you think, failing that I'll rent a Brompton for the weekend from Velorution.

Beer = I may partake in Whitstable this time as I'm planning to train back from Canterbury and may as well get shitfaced happy first. Crashed my Strida pished in the dark in the local park (shortcut) last week. got very wet and muddy. laughed like a drunken drain. I cannot be held responsible for the sale of a very passable Shiraz for a mere £10 in my local. A bottle each seemed like a good plan, at the time.

Lights = AyUp. I like riding up behind the Hope boys'n'girls because my lights aren't man enough. They are good for posing in, particularly in daylight when I have my posh cycling attire on. When everyone else's battery power is diminishing, there is nothing better than turning my second AyUp on and watch their derrieres disappear into the distance. (Seriously Hopes are good bang for the buck but AyUps imo are more 'Sandy')

Carradice = Happy to pack/bring a Bara Brith for them as eats it. I like Bara Brith much as I like small children. Very nice but I couldn't eat a whole one.

Rack = My Tubus Fly still hasn't arrived (tis now on back order) There are no Flys on me...bike.

I'll definitely not be trying to 'outShutt' the Shuttmistress - I'll wear Lidl this time.

All fixed Greg. I like your idea of wine sampling. The mere thought of you drinking and riding sends shiraz down my spine...
The 'torta negra' is nice too - make sure it is vegetarian friendly + extra treacle - me old fruit!

I have no desire to witness the grazed knees and elbows and bruised hips and egos.

Best keep Thom and Davy at the back of the peleton - they're a danger to themsleves.

Or 7.

The little dash to the cafe is the only way I can justify eating and boozing so heartily!

If I do get the last waymarking spot I'll have time to pump up my tyres and see how many people I can pick off on the way to the seafront...
