I previously asked some newbie qns and got many useful answers - some of which were contradictory of course!

Re front lights: I have an eggwhite one watt - will it be apprpriate? I have used it once only - predawn in Richmond Park and am not at all sure that it will be adequate in the potholed lanes of Surrey. Any mid range suggestion welcomed - I do not want to spend £250 plus on Exposure lights.

if you're going to make a habit of this then go for the Cateye EL530 or the Hope Vision 1. If you think it might be a one-off wait until the weather forecast is firm, and if it's a clear night you'll get away with a twenty quid Polaris or Electron job.

Bear in mind that there is only a bit over an hour of complete darkness, and that we've ridden the road looking for potholes, and we think if you stick to the middle-ish of the road from Blackbrook to Newdigate then you'll not have a problem. Obviously we'll check the road out again next week.

they have their work cut out. There's eighteen feet of clay under that road, and, short of building the thing on piles it's difficult to see how they might prevent it falling, ever so slowly, into the mire. Not that I have any time for Surrey, mind, especially since they seem unable to write a specification for road maintenance, but when you consider that Lonesome Lane was re-laid entirely in the last ten years, and is now beginning to fall in..........

+1. The Vision 1 is a cracking light, seems to have become the regulars' favourite. £70, absolute bargain. First time I switched on mine at Chipstead, I was amazed by the output at even the lowest setting.
