Dell, have you ever considered using walkie-talkies to keep the lead rider in touch with the lanterne rouge? We sometimes use them on MTB rides and they're pretty useful if somebody punctures, especially at night. They have a range of a couple of kms. They come with a clip that's the same as a Nokia phone belt clip so you can attach them to a shoulder strap, then it's simple to squeeze the PTT button and talk. Any number can be operated on the same frequency. I'm hoping to absent myself from the office "do" on Friday evening as it's a few yards from the town hall and I can nip over and see you all off so I could bring them along if you wanted to try them.
ah - yes. We've discussed this one. Happily the present system is perfect.

Who's Roger?

Would love to join you chaps on what is obviously a well organised ride, but i'm already entered for the Wrynose or Bust / Bay Dash on the Sunday so don't want to risk damaging the bike.

Why are Colinj & potsy & all the guys who did this ride last week on the Sunday not up for this?

Ribchester, Longridge & then out to the coast is part of my (almost) daily ride as some of you know.
Remember - it's downhill to the coast - ok, it's certainly flat.

Enjoy - stay upright

I'm very sorry to be missing this one: all my formative cycling was done in this area, and you'll be going right past my parents' house.

Have a great time.

I'm not doing it because my boss has organised a department pissup in Manchester for the same evening. The restaurant is very close so I shall try to get away for a few minutes to see you all off though. Maybe I'll fire a gun into the air? The riders will be given an extra impetus up Deansgate as armed Police converge on the town hall.

Curiously the ride to Blackpool crosses the Fylde, which is completely flat, then for the last three miles seems to climb two or three little hills. Can't understand why, maybe it's one of those optical illusions? As you approach the sea there's no obvious loss of the height you feel you've gained.

PS: I've just checked the OS map and I see that all the spot heights on the B5266 are between 6m and 20m although as the road passes the village of Hardhorn (great name!) there's a hill that reaches the dizzy height of 24m.

Ben - when Andy and I rode the route again we had precisely the same feeling as we had on Monday. The road does really seem to go uphill toward the front. Equally the long drag up to Longridge appears, at times, to be flat, and I was looking down thinking 'legs don't fail me now!'

I really wanted to do this ride seeing as it's "Local" but i am working the next day and Blackpool to Bolton would be a bugger of a commute  I was even thinking Fixed if i could have done it because i like the pain now !!!!!

Have a good and safe ride chaps and i hope to join you on the next one.

I think 24 metres of Hardhorn would make anybody dizzy!

Anybody riding those roads when we rode them on a Monday would be forgiven for never wanting to go back there again. At night they're so very different.

Dell you really ought to come up for a weekend in Lancashire with a few London pals. I could guide you along some delightful empty roads and show you some proper hills, not just yer B road gradients!

Google Trough of Bowland, Waddington Fell and Cross 'o Greet to get an idea of the kind of riding on offer if you want to get away from the traffic.
