What gear changes? The best advice I was given was to get into the lowest gear I'd got right at the start, otherwise the gradient catches you out. I hate Ditchling Beacon (but then I don't like hills in general), sorry!

Thing is.... TMN, you have such an advantage over so many on here to be a natural born climber, on account ot the T in TMN.
And the MN, come to think of it....

It's a whatever-works-for-you thang, but due to the alternating nature of the climb (steeper/less-steep/steeper/less-steep), I prefer to alternate. My lowest gear on the road bike is 39/25, so I generally use that for the less-steep bits (sitting down), and go up a gear and get out of the saddle for the steeper bits. It's always a relief when you sit back on the saddle and you have a gear in reserve...

Indeed its not that bad, I managed to weave a tandem with the Mrs on the back up there bewteen the walkers on a LtoB ride and didn't need to get into the lowest gear. I wouldn't go into your lowest gear at the start, that just loses all your momentum and then you have no bail out gear later. get in your smallest chain ring and then work your way up the cassette as you go. Get into a rythym and keep tapping away at a decent cadence.
