Point of order Frank.
There is only 1 transmitter in Crystal Palace in the London Borough of Bromley. The other one is in Upper Norwood across the border in the London Borough of Croydon. Adrian's favourite London Borough.

Yours geographically pedantically,
Me.

Ian, many thanks for the additional clarification!

Funny how the Upper Norwood / Croydon lot have been able to keep theirs such a secret while the Crystal Palace one is so well-known.

Not justifying anything - just putting into context previous comments - they are totally different rides/style of events. I'm not at all asserting that FNRttC isn't a great ride - as are others such as Dulwich Dynamo. They are perhaps aimed at different markets - you guys see such stuff as superfluous, we see it as a comprehensive, well organised event - and not simply a ride? Not everyone partakes in sportivesregularly and for many this will be their first foray into such rides and we have an obligation to deliver a fuller expereince - we see our challenges as much more of an "event" rather than a "registration and ride" - it's just a difference in opinion!

Hope the weather is good for FNRttC!

Well, you are. If you weren't trying to justify the fee, you wouldn't have posted in the first place. And if you're going to go on about sportives (either the fully commercial sort or charity-aiding ones), well you're not exactly good value compared to those either. My next one includes a ferry ride (as most of it's on the IOW), well-stocked feed station, a load of energy products and assorted other extras, most of the worthwhile stuff you're including and none of the bumf. For £33. Plenty on here would consider that poor value, let alone what you're charging.

I was going to say it was a bit too early for that ploy as it was only 10:00 - but then I realised that it was just the right time!
The right time for a Nice Healthy Fat Boy Breakfast you mean.............................

Frank - hold yourself in readiness. I'm going to walk you around the gallery, and we can admire the work of Rubens, Rembrandt and Gainsborough together.

you've no idea, have you?

If you can get enough mugs to pay £89 for the same level of service they'd get on the Martlets FNRttC, which includes support vehicles, mechanics, insurance, toilets, refreshments at the midway point (within the price), a control room staffed by people who know their stuff, bike transfer if needed, medical help at the tail end, free t-shirt, medal, bar at the end with both brown and yellow beer, not to mention personal help with training, free Dr. Bike sessions, discounts at shops and embedded marshals with upward of a thousand night rides between them and so on and so forth. all well and good - but you're going to have to put up with a bit of mickey-taking from now until the 9th September

it's not a different market - it's a different way of doing things. The Martlets FNRttC could not be run without the sixty or so volunteers who turn out on the night - doing anything from serving sandwiches to standing at a junction for anything up to four hours. The extraordinary thing is that in this instance the volunteers often have the kind of expertise that isn't available elsewhere - at any price.

Its also a demonstration of how the co-operative idea can trounce the commercial. Wow if Dave C reads this he might be holding dear Dell up as a Big Society Hero ... take a bow Si ...

I'd told him the same thing several months ago! Dell will turn up with a blue star jersey on, soon enough.............

you did indeed. As it goes I'm a great believer in that Dave calls the Big Society - but it does take a lot of effort.

'Teef - do you remember the Dulwich Gallery thefts? Six million quid's worth taken out of the frames when the commissionaires weren't looking (in the good old days they used to pop out of the back door, leaving it open, to get buns from the bakery). Of course that was when six million quid got you a Rembrandt self-portrait (probably the best Rembrandt self-portrait). The robber made his or her getaway on a bicycle.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Don't Dave and Boris both ride bikes? I would happily cough up £89 to see them view the Big Society in action*. Of course they'd have to buy the drinks when we got to the Madeira...

*and I might even not take a knife to their tyres.

Ob Cylcing: Opposite Dulwich gallery is Dulwich Park. In which reside London Recumbents, purveyors of odd bicycles to the masses. From where we bought the Pino, transporter of HMQM on many and varied rides.
