A BIG thank you to everyone who helped me out today, especially srw and Mrs srw for transport duties. Despite the variable weather, I was enjoying myself until nearly the end...

It's a bit more complicated than that...
RVW (Mrs srw) had come to meet me at Emsworth, and drove out to pick up User482 and his bike (two damaged wheels at least). We then took him to Guildford station (where we were headed anyway) to save him the journey across London - I presume he picked up the trains to Reading and thence on to Bristol

User482 and others involved directly - it's possibly worth getting yourselves and your bikes professionally checked over, for the record and in case there's something an on-the-spot inspection didn't pick up. In case of damage it's worth contemplating an insurance claim.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
A small and select group left HPC at midnight and a tiny little bit. The first part of the route through London was familiar, but at some stage we dived off along a series of main roads towards Walton-on-the Hill. The heavens opened at about 12:40, and remained open for a couple of hours. It turned out that the Met Office was hopelessly inaccurate. That meant lots of standing water, and lots of runoff.

TimO (acting as TEC) punctured somewhere on a dual carriageway, leaving the rest of us huddled under a tree on a side road which didn't offer much protection from the elements. The route to Horsham was pretty, but would have been better without the foul weather - more than one rider (me included) was caught out at a stop with wet gloves off, struggling to reglove with wet hands.

Pulborough at dawn was pretty; Bury Hill was as nasty as had been suggested (change to lowest gear and haul for a mile and a half) but resulted in a decent view over the Arun valley. From then on the ride was just peachy until the incident - a clean descent to Chichester (very pretty), a bike-only level crossing, the Bosham variation with seaweed, and a great breakfast.

I had no working bike computer, and the GPS's batteries failed half way down (and now it's failing to turn on even with new batteries). Does anyone have a GPX or a distance?

On a personal level, that's the furthest I've ridden since last summer and very close to my solo record. And I was delighted to be able to hold my own among even a not-so-super-speedy ride.

As far as I know there were no major injuries. That is to say no ambulances were needed, my first aid kit stayed put and Simon didn't have to accompany anyone home. I did dig out the emergency double chocolate cookies though.

I think details will come out in due course.

Simon did say at breakfast he was expecting (and half hoping for) a rebellion at Horsham. It honestly wasn't that bad. I did the second half of the ride (including climbing Bury Hill) wearing the three layers I started out with (all long-sleeved), a fleece, and a cagoule.

Situation escalates to Emergency Double Chocolate Cookies?

That's on par with DEFCON1, is it not?

Wouldn't have been much point in my case- first train home not until 6.19. If I hadn't had wet feet, it would have been fine, as it was merely slightly less pleasant.
