Why is it not possible to add a bike carriage to trains during the Olympics?
Because that would involve common sense and also a sense of doing what is right by your customers and the populace in general. Unfortunately, great though these Olympics will be, it will be in spite of LOCOG (who have probably issued instruction to train companies) rather than thanks to them.

Bloody hell, a bike story with absolutely no one writing comments, complaining about cyclists jumping red lights, or cycling on pavements ...

I must admit I don't see what difference the updated advice makes, it seems to be saying exactly the same, unhelpful thing.

Barnet,
I presume that the start point has returned to HPC after the brief diversion to Waterloo bridge because of some jubillee bash for the Whitstable ride?

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I'm sure that Mice can explain the technical details, but I suspect that modern commuter trains just can't pull extra carriages - they come in multiple carriage units rather than as loco + carriages. I think a lot of platforms are also rather full, and of course some trains (notably Southern's from Brighton) are designed to squeeze in as many seats as possible rather than have standing space, which is easier to fill with bikes.
