Actually Dover to Dunkirk might be a better option. Afternoon ferry, Cheap Formule1 in Dunkirk for the night and about 60 mile round trip Sunday. Ferry with bike is a tenner each way. Lots of trains back to London from Dover.

I was wondering if, instead of the SMRbtL after next year's Whitstable - there was an optional ride on to Dover for lunch and the Continent. Calais to say Ypres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ypres) and back for Sunday evening is quite do-able (and very flat). Hence no need to take any leave from work.

The Menin Gate is a true and powerful counterpoint to HPC.

Might this give rise to a 'Menin Lycra' thread...

After spending a joyous weekend on the Isle of Wight I feel compelled to offer the suggestion of a circular route round there. Routes can be in region of 65 miles with some fantastic scenery and not too challenging terrain. Isle is VERY cycle friendly

For a more adventurous trip, it could be tagged onto the back of a London - Portsmouth ride.

Ferries are abundant and not too pricey and campsites too if it were an overnighter.

Happy to do some further investigation and possibly reccy..... in fact I am so enamoured I am seriosly thinking of heading back over for some of the Isle of Wight Bicycle Festival 18-26th September.....

you mean you haven't been bored to tears by my little architectural disquisitions already? Or is that why you relish TEC duties?

Au contraire, mon ami. My eyes (and ears) are always open to be educated.

I tend now to stay more at the back to help out, which is fun, but also because I realised on one occasion last year, as I chased after ILB up Turners Hill and he was slowly pulling away from me, that sadly with probably an extra 15 kg and 28 more years than Andy, it's not just about the bike (no matter how bling Ti is). Sob.

Anyway, back to the topic in hand. Although you've put a hex on Hastings, you hadn't depth charged my other suggested destinations. Here's another one for your delectation:-

Gatwick to Dover. From one international gateway to another. 85 miles and not overly hilly with only 1 hill just over 10%. Halfway stop would need sorting at either Tonbridge or Royal Tunbridge Wells though.

Easy to get to Gatwick, and using it as a departure point has a certain frisson, whilst of course on earlier pages I've highlighted the many links Dover has, such as the HS1.

Nicely bumped. Preliminary investigations have been made for a Cardiff-Mumbles jaunt. Millennium Stadium to the pier. I have a halfway stop and a destination cafe, and no hills after the halfway point. Will pester DZ to look into it further when the pressure is off after the Big Martlets Ride. Who's up for it?

Well that's up to His Zeqqness, innit? Route suggestion awaiting approval...

As long as it doesn't include rich singing the Tony Renis back catalogue...I'll play.

If I could tie it in with a family visit to Brecon I'd be interested, TC. I'd insist that rich sings the Tony Renis back catalogue though as it takes away the pain of a hill climb.

I've skimmed through this thread out of curiosity, but can't claim to have read every word of every post. I'm also a noob round here, so don't know what you've done in the past. However I have a suggestion and a comment.

Suggestion: Glasgow to Edinburgh. No train problems and go down to Portobello for your seaside experience.

Comment: cycling to Oban won't go as there are only 3 trains a day on the West Highland Line! Don't blame Beeching for this one, I think it only ever was a single line in most places due to the terrain. To be honest, the scenery is so good that it would be a shame to do it in the dark! What you could do is cycle out in the dark, have a rest in Oban, and cycle back in the daylight. (I have no idea about distances and times and so on; I'm assuming that if it sounds interesting you can work it out...)

Excellent! The route I'm looking at is fairly flat by Welsh standards, and half of it is flat as a rug. I wish I could say the same for Swansea-Brecon (for Brecon has no train station), but at least the views are spectacular. If you do Brecon-Cardiff-Swansea-Brecon in 24hrs I reckon that's Mouseketeer stuff.

Nice piccs - I'd be tempted. I'm looking for a flattish route to strart my FNRTTC career - especially if it's next year, (by which time I'll have bought a new bike with all the trimmings if all goes to plan)

Is it easy to get a train to the start and finish though? You're living in another country for goodness sake
