Actually, its totally untypical.

I have twice been looking for campsites in Yorkshire and have been invited into strangers houses to spend the night and had breakfast, all for free.

I spent 4 years in London and was never offered anything by anyone.

I've been up there mainly for work, and a few times for holidays, and always found people generous.

You were in the the WEST of Scotland, obviously. Edinburgh folk are well known for enquiring as to whether or not you require feeding when you visit them and you are greeted with - "You'll have had yer tea then?"

Stephen, you are totally right about the Scots. I lived in Dalkieth for 2 years and they cannot do enough for you.

In London, even getting to know your neighbours was a challenge.

I've been fed and given a bed in Edinburgh, and fed in Bo'ness, Dundee, and Cupar as well.

It depends whether he came with an interpreter or not.

Though to be fair a northerner in London will only be asking for directions to the nearest dole office/post office to cash the giro/pub (usually one follows the other)

You were almost right, but missed one important bit out.

The last one's a bit of a struggle though as we don't like drinking shandy.

Very funny I moved to Lincoln{not the north i i know} from Reading now when ever London is mentioned at work all i get is Hey your from London whats that street/pub/shop like.
