Don't forget, the fact you do a physical job needs building into the claim. My medical reports now state that the injury won't really interfere with my desk job, but I will struggle to do any manual job in an open labour market (career change), and goes on about heavy DIY jobs. This you need to ensure get's noted, especially if say, you can't lift heavy objects above shoulder height.

As to the punishment, yes it is surprisingly low, but things are getting better. Back in the 80s a pal of mine (motorcyclist) was killed near Elephant by an RLJ-ing Escort van. The driver got a fine. A year or so later his mother started Roadpeace in his memory. I haven't followed the charity for years now, but in the early days it did help make a difference to the Law.

However slight the punishments seem today, they are MUCH better than they were. Glad to hear the OP is up and about again.

Is Roadpeace still around?

You knew Mansoor? I remember his mother speaking with eloquence, frustration, conviction and passion at a road safety conference a few years ago.

I did. We'd been at school together. I collected his bike from the Police Pound in Bermondsey and took it to be crushed. We insisted that it was crushed rather than broken for parts. There was some juvenile idea that that would be a better end for it. It was quite a shocking week.

The circumstances sounded traumatic for those involved, Bicycle and I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Of little comfort I know, but the work of Brigitte Chaudhry and RoadPeace is a worthy memorial to her son.

Judges and magistrates have to stick to their guidelines. They can't impose a more stringent sentence just because they feel like it. In this case, the real punishment was the ban and/or points. The low fine will almost certainly be because the defendant was (or claimed to be) on benefits. The court has no way of checking whether they are telling the truth, and has to follow guidelines for fines, too. Result: lots of offenders being fines £100 or less.

Update, if anyone's interested. The legal stuff's almost sorted, well, halfway there anyway. In terms of compensation for injury damages I've received a cheque for a bit over 6k. The loss of earnings claim is ongoing, so who knows, may receive another cheque soon. Was a rather long, painful and challenging recovery process, but all good now so a bit of cash is a nice bonus.

Ultimately if a London Cabbie hadn't taken the driver's plate I'd have received nothing, the dodgy driver would have got away with it. Hoping to obtain the taxi fella's details from the police and give him a few quid to say thanks :-) Excellent human being.

Crap sentence for a scumbag.

I did feel it was lenient considering he accelerated off. Glad that at least he was found and charged with something, however small. He was driving a hire car so I'm hoping a company will think twice before allowing him to hire another one.

If they won't give you his details, you could write an open letter to the taxi company to see if they will pass on your thanks. If you don't know the company, then send an email to a few of them in the area.

Good shout, thanks! He was a London black cab so hopefully can be located :-) Don't know the chap's name or cab number but he provided a statement that the police will have. Will see what they say- would be great to catch him before Christmas.

Thanks! Yep it's all good now, no problems- even back on the boxing pads. Just a bit of a bump where the collar bone sticks out a little, don't notice it anymore.

Great. Mine was only a Grade 1 strain, and that was very troublesome and needed surgery, so your progress is super. Dodgy joints shoulders, they really don't like getting banged up.

You've done well to get an interim payment for the injury so soon, and as for loss of earnings, that should follow very soon !

Thanks DougieAB! Certain all will be good :-)

It's a tricky one as every shoulder sep is different (for instance my right shoulder is now slightly farther forward than the other). Buuut sticking at the weights and strengthening those ligaments you'll find that the pain won't be there when cycling anymore.

Wish you all the best in your recovery- hopefully it will get completely better!

With mine i can no longer swim backstroke -my left arm rotates out to the side.!

Do all the pysio recommended exeercises!
