Hi, thanks for the link. at first glance, It seems to confirm what I was suspecting, that is that my derallythingmy is not fully adjustable, maybe because the bike is cheap (under the 300 bracket?). I will read it in more detail when I'm awake but I think the "braze-on" mounting applies.
When I did not know how to use my gears and was forever in 3rd back, middle front, I never felt I had a problem with the chain grating

ok so it is a clamp on 1 maybe its not strt with the frame, thats the first thing you should check
as i said b4 the adjusment can be fiddly and if the derailleur is not strt you will have a real issue getting it right

will be one of these 5 instruction sheets. start at the very beginning and go through in stages. it will seem like a faff, but having wasted hours of my life not following the manufacturers instructions , beleive me when i say the instructions will work and solve the issue.

I am very interested in this info as I have the same problem as geopat, bike is a land Rover, I actually have the leaflet that came with the bike, it says shimano tourney on it. After trying to fix the grating gears myself, I took the bike to the lbs I bought it from. He made it worse, now the chain is catching the derailleur in first, second and third gear, unless I shift from the middle to the smaller back ring. Are there any gear combinations (apart the ones that cross the chain) that I am not supposed to use?
Shall I waste another day of my life trying to adjust like subaqua says, or shall I look for another lbs?

if you really cant faff about with it again then find a diff bike shop or go bk to same 1 and give em hell till he fixes it properly but it really is better to figure it out yourself so you can do it again if need be and yes it is time consuming to figure it out but once you have the knack of it you will be able to do it easy also if you have 2 adjusters one on derailleur and 1 at shifter it seems to me to work different ends of the gears i know it shouldnt but adjusting both gives different results.

Hope I will make it, because I also have an old mb I love, but the gears never worked on it, the lbs says it's not worth his while to bother.

well all i can say is he aint worth your buisness and i would give him a slap if he turned me away with that attitude not that i condone violence but some ppl need a wake up call, stick at it and when its sorted you will get that warm feeling all fettlers get when they fix something themselves and will be proud next time your shifting through the gears like "i made that work".

Ask a silly question eh? Thanks anyway ... No 4 states to loosen the top adjustment screw 1/8 th of a turn...I'll try that on Sat, cheers

Well, don't want to speak too soon as I haven't ridden the bike and the clearance appears virtually nil, but that 1/8 th of a turn seems to have done the trick.

Well its cured on the big gear but its arrived on small front chainring and small rear sprocket..ie when chain is crossing. I think this is more difficult to sort.

That's a combination you should not be using - or using only very rarely - so should not be a problem.

As well as stressing the chain, using such a combination is also not advised because, er... your chain can foul on the derailleur.

If you only have a problem with this combination, then "congratulations": you've sorted it!
