Is there any disadvantage to buying a braze on front mech plus separate clamp, as opposed to a band on mech? I'd like to be able to swap my groupset between bikes in the future, and the braze on option would seem to offer the most flexibility in this regard.

Campagnolo Chorus 11sp if it makes a difference.

There is no difference at all, go for it.

The difference as I was told is the band-on one reduces the effective clearance behind the seat tube so if you've a frame with particularly hard geometry and a wheel that's close to the tube, you should use braze-on.

The clamp for the braze on is the same as the clamp on, so it makes no difference, the difference is if you have the mount already on the frame be it brazed on a steel frame welded on an alloy frame rivited on a carbon, then there is greater clearance.
