40k to drive a large, heavy, unmanoeuvrable wheeled bomb on our roads. to a timetable.

Yep, but only £17k if you do the same thing in Helmand.

Just saying ;)

Just googled and found that youtube has tonnes of videos of tanker fires and explosions. All from countries where they dont have our health and safety standards, a standard the industry here is trying to push into. It makes you think.

It's only a lorry. It only becomes a bomb when a Taliban Wheeler gets in the driving seat with a timetable ^_^

Oh, and actually they aren't technically unmanoeuvrable because they manoeuvre them into very small spaces quite accurately. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean it's a valuable skill worth £40k+ ayear.

We all mostly want cheap supermarket fuel, I have every sympathy with drivers having to work on short term contracts, but I suspect this may well be driven by the power of the supermarkets to reduce supplier margins to the bone, yet again.

I wonder how much more fuel you use by running around with the extra weight of a full tank compared to one half full, where I normally keep mine.
According to my theory ....no more fuel, because the car runs close to empty for as long as it runs close to full, so the fuel consumption will be the same as a vehicle which runs half full all the time, and fuel is saved by making fewer diversions to visit petrol stations than a person who maintains a half full tank.

You sure about that? and why would I want to take a huge pay cut to drive a lorry again?

quite happy for my taxes to increase, and for your fuel taxes to be increased, to pay squaddies more money and be given better equipment (but not from the MoD who are incompetent)

cheaper still to bring them home.

So.....

This dispute is supposed to be about safety (ref:BBC news). Now a number of petrol station have run dry the government have relaxed the driving hours limit to allow drivers to work 11 hours in a shift (ref: BBC news again). The union and its members seem quite happy about this, but surely this compromises safety.... or am I being naive?
