... I'm grasping at straws to find a fault, but I do feel that the Allez 16 is a little under geared...

BlackPanther, what do you think about the brakes especially the brake pads? I find very difficult to stop, even pressing both brakes at the same time, when I am doing anything over 16mph.

Durano plus tyres (note how I even lined up the wheel/tyre writing......anyone else do that?)

Certainly looks nice but you should really have the tyre writing opposite the wheel writing to ensure you don't get wheel wobble at certain revs because of poor weight balancing...

Your brakes are not set up properly if you are having this issue, you should easily be able to stop a bike very quickly from 16mph.

I think i already said that i found that seatpost racks are ok but i found the weight a bit to high when cornering fast you can feel the weight shifting, mind you i do carry a lot of "essentials ".

The ebay add says £20 worth of lights , a bit overoptimistic you can get them for £4 from my favourite light shop

Are there any problems with these kind of things because of the (almost) sideways force being applied to the seatpost from a heavily laden pannier?

I had this problem with my bike too. Although not an Allez I imagine that my Secteur Sport had a similar brake setup to this bike (tektro calipers, garbage all-in-one brake pads). I changed my front pads to Clarks CPS240's. The brakes are way better now and these pads were a bargain for £9.99 for brake pad carriers and 2 sets of pad inserts. I just need to buy another set for the back. Or you could try Kool Stops that seem to be popular on here but they will cost you more as they are not that cheap with carriers. Whether they are any better I do not know as I have never used them. Different pads will make a vast difference, assuming your setup is the same as mine was.

Most seatpost rack are limited to around 25 llbs for their load, i found that my seatpost rack held the panniers to high so you could feel the weight moving around as you cornered hard or when hacking up a hill. I can only imagine the bending forces on your seat post if you have 20 or so llbs + weight of the rack pulling on the seatpost, unless you do the rack locking pin up really tight the whole rack can move.

Another issue i had was that someone could easily swipe you rack if you did not lock it to the bike and was heavier than my standard rack .I also found that the panniers would rub onto the crud mudgaurd arms and push the pile strips onto the wheel making harder to pedal .

All in all i would rather have a full time rack on my full time commuter than put up with the swinging weight and bags touching stuff when fully loaded.

Hmmm. I do need to lose a bike (space considerations). Perhaps my ageing Allez with some similar 'guards would do the job of commuter and general all-round riding bike. Either that or I'll buy a winter training frame and transfer the best bits of the Allez and my current commuter over to that (so I can run 28s), then sell the leftovers.

My rack has the bars to stop the panniers from moving in towards the wheel. It is fairly light....not quite as light as a normal pannier system, but I wanted something that was quick release for the weekends. I don't carry much weight, just snap box and waterproofs.

I like the little bags slung over the top tube - what are they?

Just cheapo ebay bags. A couple of quid from Japan I think.

They seem pretty well set up on mine. I may fit different pads, but they do stop me o.k. from high speeds.

Yes mine has the bits on the side as well but i geuss i carry lot more stuff as the weight pulls the bottom of the bags below the ends of the rack, if you only have a snack box + waterproofs its not a lot of weight and should be fine, my response was more for 400bhp as he was asking about the drawbacks of a seatpost rack.
This what i had in my panniers today ...

sandwich box
rainlegs
overshoes
work t shirt
pants
spare gloves
spare buff
windproof
arm warmers
tights
topeak road morph
2 inner tubes
lidl`s repair kit /saddle bag with extra tyre levers as the ones in the pack look like cheese
tyre boot
quick chain link
keys +phone
couple of spare brushes for crud guards
Thermos mug + award card i had just one for a quality improvement at work.

Hehe ...
most of my commute does not go within 5 or even 10 miles of a cycle shop and at times when they would be shut, no bus service either to speak of so i have to be prepared .
I found out the hard way trying to repair a bust bike in sub zero temperatures in only cycling gear getting the onset of hypothermia .
