I got a garmin 800 cheap on ebay (£140) and use it mostly just for reference from time to time, I stopped caring about performance and don't use the sat nav feature often, but has got me home from the middle of nowhere when phone battery would have otherwise died from strava usage.

The thermometer is invaluable as it makes me more mindful of ice, and I also like to see what speed I'm doing as it makes me more confident when holding primary with cars behind (not unnecessarily hogging the road).

Doesn't seem particularly wise to me to go anywhere without the phone, especially not miles away from home. But that's the only gadget I have, though I do want a GPS of some sort.
Makes you wonder how we got on before mobiles.

I don't take my phone cycling, it is Mark time and I want to be uncontactable! I don't have any gadgets, I used to have computer but only used it for the time.

Just put it in airplane mode and you won't be contactable. My GF won't let me out the house without my phone and to be honest I wouldn't want to leave without it.

I'm all for the gadgets! Love em
I have my garmin 800 all the time recording my ride and receiving data from my heart rate monitor

I also have my iPhone tracking my ride which allows my wife to track me in real time (which she likes)

I even link the bike up to trainer road when on the turbo to give me the ride plan and track my progress

I have a Carradice quick release system, that's a rather handy gadget.
This was the kind of thing that Arthur C Clarke was referring to when he said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

You can switch the modern ones off, and still have them for emergency.

I am well aware of the phones facility to not always be active, but it's still there and I don't want it there when I am out cycling. People know it's not there, I am free, can't be contacted and nobody expects me to contact them, it's bliss.

PS. huwsparky, check for spyware....................
