I know there's a thread somewhere but I can't find it, nor is the search function helping me

I want to get a .gpx file that @jefmcg onto my 800 but I cannot get it to work, despite trying from ridewithgps, following several guides found via Google

Please help - I am using a PC laptop!

(I hate this b'stard Garmin thing and gadgets generally)

if the gpx file is on your pc, right click and copy.

Open the garmin file, find NEW and paste in the file. (garmin connected to pc via usb)

Disconnect Garmin

Turn on garmin.

Done

Nope, deleted all files, tried again...nothing on the Garmin

Why do the other files on the PC have a .fit suffix?

Garmin uses .fit format and will convert the files to that format.

You are pasting it into the "NewFiles" folder and not into the "courses" folder directly aren't you? Does it leave that folder after the eject, turn off, turn on process?

Friend of mine had this the other day, his pc would not download it so he could not copy it.

I downloaded the file and e mailed it to him and he pasted into new files with no issue.

Have you tried creating a simple course on RWGPS and putting that in?

I have no idea how to do that, hence jefmcg has done it...I thought I had uploaded it to my garmin from RWGPS

I have tried putting it all over the place in the Garmin folder, deleted, repasted about 5 times! It worked before, I don't know what it's doing differently now

If you go on to RWGPS are you exporting the file, to your downloads file?

The file must be in your downloads for you to copy the contents.

On your garmin is a folder call either NEW or NEW Files, you have to paste the file from your downloads into that folder.

The garmin then converts it and places a fit file of it in the courses file. The new file will show as empty.

Yes, I am downloading from email, copying from downloads into the new files...disconnecting garmin properly...nada, just tried again. Is there any secret way of naming the files

I have just attached the garmin again, now nothing in the folder, but don't know where it is? Should something show in garmin connect

I simply have little to no understanding of computer / gadget software! Aren't these things meant to be simple, they cost enough!

You dont need GC, in fact dont even go there, ever, at all.

So from your email , download copy the file to a folder on your pc.

Open folder and check file is there.

right click and copy it.

Go to your pc, files list, garmin, new files (it will be empty) and paste it.

That should work, unless the file is corrupt in the first place.

If its the same as a 705 then it sounds like youre copying to the wrong folder.

The course folder is for .tcx files and it wont show on the garmin.

Gpx files need to be put in the specific gpx folder.

On the 800 (and the touring) the course folder show .FIT files. You use the new files and the garmin does some trickery and converts them.

My old 205 was completely different.

From RWGPS

OK, SO HOW DO I GET THE FILE ON MY GPS?

  1. Plug in your Garmin
  2. On the website, navigate to your route or ride
  3. If you are a premium user, use the Garmin Write feature of the site
  4. Otherwise, click the Export tab then click on your desired filetype, either TCX Course or GPX Track
  5. If your computer prompts you to save the file to a specific location, place it somewhere memorable like the desktop.
  6. Using the Finder, My Computer or other tool on your computer, open up the drive associated with the Garmin, usually labeled Garmin
  7. Open the Garmin folder located inside the Garmin drive.
  8. Click/drag the exported file from your desktop to the NewFiles folder.
  9. Safely remove the Garmin (Eject on an Apple machine) and unplug it from the computer
  10. After powering it on click the Courses icon and locate your route
