Garmin 800 not linking with computer

I've bought a 2nd hand garmin 800 and I can't get it to link in with my iMac. I've downloaded the plugin software but the computer still isn't finding the garmin devise.
Can anyone help with this?

I get this three fixes that work for me are ;-

1. New Mini USB cable
2. Change the USB slot that you use on the Computer
3. Turn on the 800 wait for it to get to the searching page and then plug in.

Three normally works straight away.
