Hi all

Just got myself a Garmin 810, and will test it tonight. I have a few questions, that I wonder if you can help with?

- Is the screen easy to see when using it for navigation? I see that the light fades away after 15 seconds and am concerned that it won't be easy to see when riding.

- Having plotted a route on Bike Route Toaster, I've uploaded the course. When I plan the route, I use the auto routing system and click at random points along the planned route.

Will the Garmin 810 tell me inadvance of a turning, or just in advance of one of the cue points that I randomly made?

- Once I select my course and hit 'ride', will it start tracking my ride or do I need to do anything else?

Thanks!

Yes it is pretty visible when navigating, you need to alter a setting to stop the back light going off though, I don't have it to hand to give exact instructions but if you hit the power button (don't hold it) you should get some options regarding the display brightness and the back light timer etc. Set it to "always on" or the equivalent choice.

I don't use bike route toaster, I hate the user interface, I use ridewithgps to plot routes then I download the gpx track format (I put them on the device by plugging it in and opening it like a generic usb storage device and put the gpx track in Garmin>New Files then turn the unit on and it will convert and load them into the courses list). If we assume bike route toaster and ridewithgps are similar in that they produce a cue sheet with a list of directions, then this is what the Garmin should use.

- Once I select my course and hit 'ride', will it start tracking my ride or do I need to do anything else?

It will not start logging until you hit the start/stop button, this is the right most button of the 2 on the front of the device, the other being the lap button. When you hit the start/stop button a second time you will get an option to save or discard your ride on the screen.

Thanks!

Thanks Rob, so it won't actually tell me when I have to make a turn, if I've not clicked a cue point at that particular moment?

Also, there is a start ride option on the screen, and the start/stop button underneath. Do you have to press both for it to begin navigating and to track your ride?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, have just noticed on bikeroutetoaster that the cue points are actually turnings in the road - not where I clicked to plan the route.

So that solves that one!!

It's just a case of how to start it now!

You can start either by hitting the start/stop button (right one) from any screen and it will start and go to the info screen for the currently selected activity profile, or you hit "Ride" from the home page to be shown the activity screen then hit the start/stop button.

To follow a course you press on the folder icon on the home page, then courses, then choose your course, then hit the ride button. Then hit the Start button!

It should be pretty intuitive to use.

Great, thanks.

I'll be using mainly the course option, as I am planning for a charity ride. So hitting start on my selected course will start tracking the ride, as well as directing me?

If you just hit ride you will get the info screens and the map etc, it will give your details in real time but it will NOT track and save, I am not sure, but I don't think the pop up cues will show either, for this you need to actually start the ride by hitting the start/stop button.

Once you start playing with it, you will soon work out how everything works, it is much more intuitive than the old user interface. It is also much more customisable.

Okay great, thanks for your help.

Any other tips for someone that needs the navigation aspect more than anything?

Either refer to the manual, or you will have to wait someone else to help because I don't have the unit to hand and can not remember where the option is. Once I leave here, I won't be back online until about half 10 tonight.

Have looked but can't see anything in the manual. On a blog it gives directions, but their menu is different to mine!

If you don't mind posting later or tomorrow, that'd be great. Thanks for all your help.
