is there a free site for geo caching anywhere - its something i would like to do in spare time ( if there is such a thing as spare time ) with family , walking but it always seems to end in pay sites

Geocaching.com is free for basic membership. To start with it is plenty for the casual player. Many many people play for years without upgrading their membership. It's also the biggest of the geocaching websites.
If you already have a GPS, cost is minimal. If not but you have a smart phone the iOS or Android app is great, works with basic membership and costs about five quid.
I believe there's a free version of the app which limits you to finding three or five caches a day (I think).

Now, have you entered your home coordinates on the geocaching website?
If so, step outside with the edge and compare the two sets of coords. Should be within a few feet of each other.
