I've done a ride with my 910xt and switched it off when I switch it back on it prompts me to hold reset to save.
Not sure if I pressed pause or stop before switching off, maybe that makes a difference.

Pausing the ride before switching off shouldn't make any difference, it will be ready to resume the ride when you power it up again.

went for a short blast and knocked out 25 miles at 20mph. Returned home pressed pause on the edge but for some reason instead of holding in the lap reset button I pressed the power button. Ride lost. They shouldn't allow that to happen I'm fuming
I'd consider quitting cycling if I were you.

I think the firmware was fairly out of date too so it updated on plug in but going into the file system still no ride. Gutted because I buried myself and will be exhausted at work tomorrow.

I lost a ride the other day because mine just came up with "working", and nothing else, and then it sorted it`s life out when I was 50 years away from getting home.....bloody thing!! I`ve never liked the 500 since I had it new, load of crap

And it will be flat !
Back up battery. iPhone lasts fine if only using for Strava and nothing else

I learnt my lesson about Garmins a few years back. Generally they are reliable, but don't rely on them I you absolutely want a record of your ride. I now record my rides on both an 800 and a etrex. If you are doing something like a DIY Audax this is absolutely vital.

Use your phone as a back up

After an hour and a quarter? You need to get a new phone battery.

Just plot it manually on Endomondo, export it then import into Strava. It'll have no speed or time information and probably say you did it on roller skates, but it will be saved for posterity.
Ah, that's not right. If you draw a route in endomondo, it's asks for the time you took, and builds a proper set of gpx points, with you going at a constant speed. Which if you were going flat out, it could easily make you KOM for any inclines. Well, if not KOM, then a PR you can never hope to beat.

If I power down my 810, it doesn't lose the ride, however the altitude calibration goes doolally upon restarting the Garmin.

That's odd my 500 will always start where it left off. I always power off at cafe stops on longer sides to save the battery and when i power it up it carries on. It only clears when i reset it.
Have you looked in your activities file when you plug it in to pc? It might be there.
