Around my area there had been a spate of what seem to be targeted bike thefts. It was noted on another web based discussion that people using route tracking tools, such as can be found on garmin or most smart phones, should be carefull not to make their routes public as often the start and finish indicates where a bike is kept.

Anyone heard of this type of thing happening or is it too far fetched?

It's plausible. I keep all my GPS data private unless the start and end points are neutral. Endomondo for instance worries me that unless you tell it not to, it will display a live track of you visible to anybody at all through the 'people out now' feature.

Myth?

The traditional way is to follow a cycle home / work/ shopping and then steal.

Everything you do is a risk.

A quick search on this forum for garmin connect and a bit mouse clicking and I think I have found a pinerollo dogma with cosmic carbon wheels in the back room in a house in Birmingham!

I have changed my settings on garmin to private!!
