Haha, there's a freezing wind blowing at the moment, and the forecast for us is to be down to 1C by tomorrow evening.

It was 1C on quite a bit of my ride in this morning, with a light frost on the fields next to the road.

One day into my customer experience with Scottish Power and I already have a formal complaint open with them.

Agreed a tariff with them yesterday and gave them details to set up a direct debit only to find out today that they hvery signed me up on a more expensive tariff and can’t move me to a direct debit until they have provided my first bill at the start of next month.

They are also apparently basing the calculations on the past year when I didn’t own the property and the previous owner kept it like a sauna ( I was sweltering during each of the two viewings. That meant that they were planning to set the DD at £255 a month but did say that the figures would be recalculated after we were in a few months. Today they renaged ever on that saying that they would we setting the DD initially at £485 a month! I nearly lost it with them at that point and insisted that they open a formal complaint.

One of the best decisions I ever did was to leave Scottish Power. At one point my account was hundreds of pounds in credit and they insisted on increasing my monthly direct debit.

SP were the supplier when the previous owners had the property and they pretty much have a monopoly in this area as they are the only company out there, according to Octopus, that give a triple tariff. For example a day rate, a night rate and a third rate for heating appliances. That will need some careful planning and calculations should I switch. They also cover the legacy FIT for the solar panels. That limits switching options a little. The bonus with SP is that they can give me a 4th tariff to charge an EV at 4p/kWh regardless of the time of day.

I’ll look at it all when I get more time.

SP update. Signed up Tuesday, first formal complaint went in Wednesday, second and third formal complaint went in toda. First complaint was at my own asking, 2 & 3 were them voluntarily rais complaints as they have gone outside of their own processes.

I do like a good battle with suppliers 😂.

EDIT: Complaint number 4 now in.

We have just gone through our 2nd winter in the house since renovation works are done.

We have underfloor heating downstairs, solar PV + battery + EV but use only night time electricty at 7p/kWh. The house has lots of insulation but we also added a stupid amount of glazing during the renovation (60sq meters) so heat loss in winter is hard to control. The amount of additional light in house however is worth the cost.

In total we spent £776 in 2025 in electricty and £1667 of gas, so in total about £203/month or £6.70 per day in energy. Not a sum you can ignore but also not bad considering that figure includes fuel for an EV that's done 10k miles last year.

Speaking of insulation, our kitchen has always been the coldest room in the house as the kitchen wall backs on to a covered passageway between two houses. I finally got round to repairing the large wooden gate that had been latched open for a few years and saw the average temperature rise by 2 degrees. It was the wind chill sucking the heat out of the brickwork.

This last week has seen our total cost for each day struggling to get over the £2 per day for our electric, gas and standing charges

How big is your house? We've a 5 bed detached, with Solar - no battery, no EV, and only spent £1100 on gas and electric combined last year. So about £90 p/m for both.

Recently we stopped turning our immersion heater on for ~45mins at the end of our overnight Economy 7, mainly because we're waiting for our ancient bath hot water tap to have washer replaced, but also water is far less chilly now winter has finished for another year.

Reduced our electric consumption from ~10KWh to ~7KWh most days.
