Hi
Just wondering what folks thought of paying for extended warranties.

Just had a new boiler fitted. The old one finally expired, but had needed nothing doing to it since I moved in, about 6 years ago (other than servicing). However the new one is a condensing boiler, and I've heard that they can go wrong more often, and are more expensive to fix when they do.

The 'free' warranty lasts for 2 years anyway, but they want me to sign up for £113 per year after that to cover parts and labour (but this doesn't cover any servicing).

I don't generally go for these extended thingies any more (don't get me started on PC World's thing for computers!) - but I was wondering if I should make an exception for the new boiler...

Funny I was considering this just recently. The trouble with boilers is, your average plumber doesn't seem to ever get it right when fixing them. I had three out to my last one, every single one of them fixed something but not the problem. Another two wanted to replace it. In the end I fixed it after talking to a few people. A simple vacuum pipe had perished and none of them spotted it.

Different boiler, another problem, pump failed. New pump on, eventually after a lot of calls to the maintenance company. A few days later it began to malfuunction, so out they came again, took the pump off and I had to point out to them that when they fitted it, it hadn't made a seal. I also had to tell them how to reset the boiler.

Cue today, new system, another problem, installing plumber scratched his head. He could clearly put them in but fault diagnosis was a level above his intellectual capacity. Luckily it was still under warranty so out came a service engineer the morning after my call who went through a thorough diagnostic and found a fault with our gas regulator valve at the supply. Fixed within two hours. I was impressed and am seriously thinking it's worth paying for an extended warranty with the manufacturing company, Worcester in this case. I'm not a fan of extended warranties but they have their place and I think boilers are one of them.

Had a new one fitted just over a year ago which has a 5 year warrenty included.
Just £113 pounds for a warrenty on a boiler doesn't sound to bad to me but I suppose it depends on what the terms are and what is actually covered.

If yours supplies your hot water straight from the mains like mine you would be snookered.

You might be able to buy a warrenty from elsewhere and get more for the money.

Sounds like a lot of money to me. I would be confident in getting ten years out of it trouble free, so less the two free years that is 8x113 = £900
Would you expect to spend £900 in new parts for a new boiler?

Have you got £400 scrappage allowance on the old boiler?

I have just applied and got a voucher from them for a boiler I am replacing in a house I rent out. May depend when it was fitted as the scheme has just come in and I am not sure on the rule if it had been fitted before you apply.

Yes - did the scrappage thing - money not in my account yet though!

You can't win. You get a warranty and nothing goes wrong util 3 days after the warranty runs out......

I wouldn't bother - you cna get B Gas to come aout and fix, fixed amount with one part free (sure there is soome restriction).

a 6 yr old boiler shouldn't go wrong, unless you abuse it.

+1 re B Gas. Also some house insurers also sell add-on policies for very reasonable price while providing coverage beyond the boiler. Check the small prints though.

But how do you abuse a boiler?
