well I put my deposit down on the bike. picking it up at the end of the month. No disrespect to the trek riders but to me it seems a nicer machine than the trek one but then it was originally a whole lot more. However I still have to buy mudguards, rack and chain guard. Thanks to all those who have replied your help has been much appreciated. i am quite excited as I have never had a bike this expensive or modern before.

... I have never had a bike this expensive or modern before.
Belt drive bikes have been around, on-and-off, since the 1800's.
They used leather belts, and a particularly nifty feature was that they installed a 180-degree twist in the belt, so the wear was spread over both faces of the belt - a nifty trick the Gates belt doesn't do.

I had a Bernds folding bike with a Gates Belt drive. I bought it used, 8 years old. Had no problems with it. Just I found it not as "responsive" or less nervous than a steel chain.
