Gatso's useful or not?

Well after my incident on the Bow Flyover at 6am with five cars doing 50 plus mph I think my opinion has changed with the usefulness of gatsos.

I find speed bumps a pain in the rear as it makes cars aim for the narrow bit but when I have been in cars where they know there are speed cameras there they tend to slow down. Then speed up.

I think a lot of this gatso money making hysteria is fuelled by the moton mad press.

The only thing with the Bow Flyover is the 30mph sign is not a standard sign.I have had many cars go fast over it and even a National Express Coach driven by a boy racer.

Flyover = junction bypass = uninterrupted road = put your foot down. Unless you put 3 or 3 speed cameras down and constantly patrol it there's not a lot one can do about it . What was your incident ?

Five cars passing me at speed...they do put their foot down yes.It got so bad I realised how dangerous it was....it was like five cars with boy racers in.I just kept my finger on the horn button just as a audible aid to them.I suppose at that time hi-viz was no help unless it was like a Superman cape.Scary incident.

What gets me is they are quite happy to endanger me but then they moan when they get done by a gatso for speeding ironically.

As a cyclist and a motorist. ( Not a Moton!! which is offensive!! )
Speed cameras are a government money making scam. The only way to stop speeding is to limit car speeds in some way or another.
If car manafacturers are going to keep building cars to run at excessive speeds then people are going to use those excessive speeds as and when they can.
If you're cycling down a hill in a 30mph limit and your cycle comp tells you you're doing 33mph, are you going to slow down ? Or are you going to feel chuffed at you achievement and try and go faster?
Be it leg power or motorised power, people feel the need for speed.
I don't care how fast people go past me, as long as they don't hit me.

Sorry:smile:

Yeah I read that in the Daily Wail also.

Speed bumps....not the crap speed bumps which make the cars aim for the gaps like a scud missile.

Aye.Some sort of traffic police with guns would do,like Thailand.

Possibly not...but if plod is not going to do any sort of clampdown on the rules then that's why I see increasing amounts of cars rljing and law breaking.

Or other innocent people.

As someone who enjoys fast cycles and fast cars am I allowed to say that it's not speed per se that is dangerous but inappropriate speed!

Think about gatso's, av. speed cameras etc. I can go through them at just below the posted speed limit without getting a fine. The fact that I could be drunk, on my phone, weaving and driving a dangerously poorly-maintained car seems to be beside the point - as long as I'm not speeding I'm not a danger to other road users?

Speed is used as a cosh to batter motorists simply because it's the easiest infringement of the law to monitor/control without having (expensive) officers on the road.

Not a popular viewpoint I know and I expect the usual bollox from a few about the Daily Mail etc. but there it is.

You realise that just *screams* MOTON!!! right?

It's completely wrong of course. At most speed cameras are a tax on the very stupid. It's easy to avoid a speeding ticket by not speeding.

Well I have never owned a car but gatsos don't stop drink/drug/dangerous driving or some clown using a phone.

I've been in a cab and he knows exactly where to slow down to avoid setting the thing off.

With todays technology, there has got to be a way of fitting cars with a device of some sort to limit them to adhere to the speed limit of that particular stretch of road.
A sensor on the side of the road that picks up a sensor in the car that slows the car to match the limit.
That way no one speeds and the government doesn't make any extra money from the motorist.........
Ok, no one should speed........But every one does at some point. Even if it's 1mph over the limit.
Maybe the technology is avaliable. Even if it was, it would be a no no due to the vast amount of money made from the cameras.

Which is the red herring... last year in Manchester they had the audacity to put Police out on the streets with Video cameras, clamping down on bad driving.

Such appalling stupidity!

Apparently according to the ABD et al such policing of the roads is:

1. Dangerous because drivers have to look for Police Cars instead of paying attention to the road
2. Persecution because drivers are already overly restricted by the Police
3. A revenue generation exercise - spot fines for being on the phone, driving through lights, parking illegally, not observing junctions is only done to raise money it has nothing to do with road safety.

So basically any censure of bad motoring is unacceptable
