Seriously, Lincolnshire has some of the most dangerous roads in the country. People drive like loons on them. The A17 is a prime example then add in potential strong winds for unpredictable handling and I wouldn't go near it.
I second that I live near Lincoln and the drivers are bad not everyone people jumping red lights from truckers to taxis uneven roads and the bridge at bardney will be shut for repairs for 3 months from april 19

You do not want to be travelling on that road unless you have a death wish. There is a ferry to West Lynn then stay in the lanes. Rejoin A17 at Sutton bridge briefly then go left and strike west for Spalding. T
Thank you. I have amended the linked route to take into account your advice, to an extent, staying off the A17 for much of the time. But riding from Holbeach, heading for the Humber Bridge, I would prefer to stay 'tight' round the Wash so the A17 it'd have to be. Would dive off at Fosdyke and through the lanes to Boston. Some amendment around Horncastle too.

. You do not want to be travelling on [the A17 out of Kings Lynn] unless you have a death wish. There is a ferry to West Lynn then stay in the lanes.
I have reviewed the ferry option and I think it looks good: every 20 minutes, during the day (not Sunday) and 'continuous' during 'rush hour'. Worth checking beforehand, I guess.
I've amended the RwGPS route accordingly:

Thanks for the warning about Lincolnshire drivers: I've amended my "Extremes" route to stay off the A roads, though it adds a few miles probably better safe than injured/dead. I'm setting off on 3rd September and flying from Bristol to Inverness, taking the train to Thurso and then visiting Dunnett Head on 4th before setting off for Ardnamurchan which I should reach on 8th. I'm averaging 100kms per day and expect to be at Lowestoft on 16th and Lizard Point on 22nd. I attach a map of my route.

Only just caught up with you, and you've finished! Well done: it sounds exciting but very wet. I hope you had my share of rain as well. I'll be credit card touring, starting at Dunnett head on 4th September and hopefully I'll hit the Lizard on 22nd. I'll be blogging on bailward.co.uk if you have some spare moments. Again congratulations. Chris

Cheers Chris
Very wet but very enjoyable.
Total mileage as the picture. Hope you have better weather and the wind on your back. I would be interested in your route. Still have the final blog to do.

Sparked by an enquiry from @Ice2911 I thought I'd share a planned route for the eponymous challenge - an end-to-end exagerated by visiting the most southerly, easterly, westerly and northerly points of the GB mainland en route.

LE, The Lizard, Lowestoft Ness, Ardnamurchan Point, Dunnet Head, JoG

I have cycled more of these roads than I haven't (iyswim) and the stretch from Boston (Lincs) to Gretna draws on the LEL2017 route.
There is an AudaxUK 'Permanent' (1000) for the long leg from Lowestoft Ness -> Ardnamurchan Point
http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JT01/

(This route would need amendment to make that leg up to 1000km, if so desired.)
Comments, general or detailed, very welcome.

I was just wondering if you completed this planned journey? I'm looking at doing something similar this summer, if allowed to travel.
It would be great to hear your story.
Thanks

No, sorry, @Toby Tyke (and :welcome: btw). I have a friend who has done the diagonal (Ardnamurchan to Lowestoft) and will ask her if she wrote it up.
Meanwhile maybe @waddonvale (seems no longer OTP)
but I have found his account: http://www.bailward.co.uk/
or @Ice2911 "misdion accomplished" can help.

Thank you for your reply. I do hope you get round to doing the route sometime.
I have read @Ice2911 story of his journey.
I will check out the other account of @waddonvale
Thanks again.

It's not adding very much to include Dungeness and Cape Wrath as well, then you've got all 8 points.
