As for your gear problem, is it front or rear derailleur that we're talking about here?

I need advice on this matter. A pal left me in a Peugeot Competition to clean up and make it road worthy. The big problem is that the ally seat post will not come out of the down tube. The clamp is off and widened out as much as poss but the stem seems to have been pushed(hammered) too far down the tube. I have used some gentle persuasion(not that gentle) but to no avail. Should I chuck the whole thing in the bin?

How much is sticking out of the top?

Typical techniques involve squirting loads of WD40 or plusgas around the area and letting it seep in. If you can get the end of the seatpost clamped in a vice and turn the frame around it you'll probably stand a chance of loosening it.
