it's a shame. the chap was going to the world cup too. reminds me of ian curtis kinning himself on the day before joy division left for their first american tour. it's a stark reminder of how severe depression can put what to some of us would be lifetime highlights down as little of significance.

I don't follow football, but I recognise at once what a shocking tragedy this is for the man's family, and for his team, and for the game worldwide. Perhaps if any good could possibly come out of this sad event, it might be an increasing awareness of the pandemic of depression which is sweeping across so many of the world's population. Most of those cases of depression don't lead to suicide but can wreck a life nonetheless. I think I am a sufferer.

...apparently driving into the path of an oncoming train.
Later news reports seem to indicate that he parked his car away from the tracks and then walked in front of the train. He had no wish to take other lives as well as his own.

Awful. I saw a guy kill himself by jumping in front of a train a couple of years ago (and in Gernany as it happens). I won't ever forget it.

my Mate is a train driver & had his first suicide last Christmas,i think it was Morden or surbiton station,a middle aged woman stepped out in front of his train in the station as he was passing at about 60mph.He was badly affected & said alot of his colleagues had hit people on the tracks.

I think it's a lot more common than people realise.

My mums next door neighbour, who suffered from depression - sat on the railway track at the back of my mums house, nasty. I heard the train driver never recovered from it.

Sadly several years ago an 18 year old apprentice from my old work took his own life - then his father stepped in front of a train at a notorious suicide spot in Stirling, days later.

All very sad indeed!
