getting photos enlarged to poster size

I.ve just posted a pic in the photo challenge thread of my handsome pooch taken a few months ago in the midst of winter...I took it with my Nokia Lumia phone and I think its rather good...anyway I would like to get it enlarged to poster size or maybe even bigger and then frame it...Does anyone know where I could get this done? I know Tesco and Asda do this kind of stuff but I would like to get it done so its kinda better quality...suggestions and info much appreciated...ta

bonusprint will do it, but if you want professional lab quality then youll have to go to a pro lab,

there are hundreds, but ive used colorword, sim2000, and onevisionimaging successfully in the past

It depends on the pic and the intended location. No, it won't be sharp; yes, it will be 'grainy' - but given the right pic and placing it could still give a lot of pleasure. I have two framed A3+ prints on the wall, each made from a scanned section of an old-style enprint, area probably no bigger than a postage stamp. They're not technically brilliant...but they're two of my favourite framed photos.

My phone takes good pictures and is set to 2080 pixels I think, or more.
What effect does a phone sensor have? What is a phone sensor even?

There is software you can use to enhance imagery when you want to enlarge to poster size or larger - even stuff taken off a tiny mobile phone sensor. On One Resize Pro is pretty good at that sort of thing, but then will you need to do that often enough to make buying the software worthwhile?

the sensor is what takes the place of film!

a pro camera sensor is the same size as a 35mm frame
a consumer level slr sensor is approximately 2/3 that size

a sensor in a phone is about the size of your little fingernail, perhaps even smaller

eith lots of pixels on a very small sensor you get cross talk between the pixels, and an inability to deal eith thr complexities that a bugger sensor can, hence the picture quality falls

i agree with swee'pea that a large grainy pic can work if its the right subject, and resize software can also work, but just bear in mind that whatever you do it wont be as sharp at that size as you might want

You could download Photoshop CS2 from here, http://www.techspot.com/downloads/3689-adobe-photoshop-cs2.html, if your computer will run it. I use it on my desktop and laptop.

This probably doesn't help...

There is a chap in the Manchester Craft Centre who has an enormously wide printer, maybe 4 or 5 feet long, who prints out his own photos as art posters and wall coverings.

The largest I personally had printed was just a 24"x30" from a 35mm film neg decades ago. Since then I have had images printed for publicity posters and banners for various jobs and they have always been done by a professional printing company. One that springs to mind is Hobs Reprographics.

Quick technical question if you know the answer. Is that pixel/pixel cross talk in the sensor (ie is it electronic) or is it the diffraction due to the (small) lens (ie is it optical)?

They can print/ plot from any file format onto any type of glossy/matt/satin finished paper or card or material. They can also laminate or mount prints onto Kappaboard or similar.

you could get optical problems with small lenses, but you do get electronic crosstalk on the sensor.

there are lots of websites that go into incredible detail if you want to bore yourself to death, but basically it comes down to the bigger the sensor the potentially better the photo

of course a good camera in the wrong hands can still produce crap but try telling people that - "my uncle has a nice camera, he's taking my wedding photos" is the comment I heard so often I decided to give up wedding photography.

They never understood when I responded "has your aunty got a nice sewing machine? Is she making your dress?"

Regarding to OP - 2080 pixels is not very many to give any sort of image over a poster size is it? I'd be surprised if you could get postcard size without much grainyness

I always like to quote Colin Montgomery (the golfer), who used to say anyone can hit as good a shot as him, its just that he can hit more of them. Its the same with wedding photography. You need to be able get the first kiss/ring shots etc without asking the vicar to start again :-)
