I don't have a choice although I do get a lift on my partners midweek rest day usually. I managed ok in the snowy weather and usually beat my car driving colleagues to work, only one day when I wished I'd put a pair of overtrousers on.
The bike threw me off one lunchtime when I cycled home just as I got to my road, I was just preparing to get off on the left side, the next second I'm lying in the road on the right side. Hobbled home had a cup of tea then went back to work, the boss tried to dock me half an hour for it - yet dock nothing for himself & a colleague whilst they dug their cars out in works time. Still getting rid of the bruising.
I enjoy the ride even though it's just 4 miles.

I got rid of the car and I honestly think it was the best decison I've made in my adult life. I've lost loads of weight (was 20 stone, now tend to hover between 12-14). No stress stuck in traffic. Pretty much everything a car is needed for you can do on a bike, public transport, or internet shopping.

/edit re: winter have a 2nd bike or pair of wheels with snow/ice tyres fitted you can pull out the garage as required.

If you can, do it, I couldn't as I have 3 kids, I need a car, especially in winter, I'd dearly love not to have car and will get rid when the kids leave. I did do a big change tho' last year to cut down on cash/useage, I sold my "normal" car bought a 4.0L, 15mpg Jeep Cherokee.

There was method in this madnes, they are wonderfully tough, reliable vehicles that take abuse, they are great in winter, for lugging all the kids around and for camping. They are cheap, because of the mpg nobody wants them, I did though, I have a mint, one owner, FSH utility vehicle for less than £1k, along with £250 insurance and pre-2001 road tax and an intense desire not to drive it (15mpg) unless absolutely necessary means that it is a very economical and useful vehicle to own.

I've considered this, but with baby and wifey that cannot drive in rural sticks and cow pat... it's not going to happen for a while.

Trips/visiting - car hire, a weekend can be had and you can pick a vehicle to suit, if you want to go on a long trip you could get a large people carrier, or just a quick jaunt on your own, a Ford Ka etc

Airports - paying someone to do the run tbh, budget flights tend to leave at bad hours for public transport

Shopping - online, quick shops at village shop etc, yes prices are SLIGHTLY higher, but would cost more just to drive to get them from the city.

Work - 10 miles, 3 different bikes and survived the winter

I do have access to borrow a car off the parents, and soon my sister  cheeky, just don't skint and pay them just petrol money.

I haven't gotten rid of my car yet because it's not worth much in resale, so im going to see how the next MOT goes.
