For some reason this website isn't showing the pictures. Unless our system at work is filtering them out.

what a wicked idea i love it, i hope that doesnt sound wrong, and i think it is a suitable tribute and a great visual reminder. i cant seem to put in words what a good idea it is

Nice idea, hopefuly when seen it will make people slow down and more aware of whats happening around them. Only neg thing i can think of, is thieves nicking bits off them, like the "dead" bits of bikes you see chained up around the city. In NY, they had sprayed outlines of people on the ground where they had been killed in memory.

It's a nice tribute.

What they should do is permanently tattoo a bike and the name of the cyclist hit onto the forehead of the moron driver who caused the death.

It's just thae same as flowers being posted up at RTA accidents... etc.
No its not, it acts as a reminder that a CYCLIST has been killed and not some boy racer hitting a lampost at 70 mph.

Great Idea, hopefully it might provoke some thought into the mindless drivers out there !, be they cabbies, WVM, bus drivers, BMW and 4x4's

I like the tribute, and I like that it acts as a warning... But I'm concerned that making the sites so visible will reinforce the mistaken view that cycling is very dangerous.

..but potentially distracting.

Around the 1.05 minute mark in the BBC video there's a ghost bike chained to the railings just before a ped crossing on a corner. That strikes me as just the place when a driver should be concentrating rather than looking at a bike chained to the railings.

Perhaps it's just me, but I think the ghost bikes could end up being a negative, being seen as a 'cycling is dangerous' thing rather than what they intend to signify

Yes, I have mixed views for that reason. If the idea grows in popularity, it could give a very misleading impression of the risks.

Cycling is a very safe activity compared to, say, driving or DIY. Cycling is also safer than not cycling when you look at the health benefits.
