More a question for the Giant Defy owners and what size THEY went for. Their medium frames show a guide of 5ft8 to 5ft11 wand then their M/L frame being for 6ft 1 to 6ft2 ins to me thats like jumping from 54 to 58cm frames in everyone else's terms with no obvious 56cm frame

The Giant size guide recommends a medium frame for my build - 5ft 9.5ins and 31 ins inside leg.

I know manufacturers geometry's are different but I've tried 2-3 bikes now and am almost set on a 56 with other manufacturers knowing I can fit a shorter stem but where do I stand with Giant

what have you guys bought? I know its all about trying them but I'd like to go in with an idea first rather than looking like i know best.

I am 6' 2 with 33 inside leg. I was between a m/l and a L. I would have guessed a M is right for you. I got a different make in the end.

I am your height., longer legged, shorter torso (female)

The Medium 2012 Defy 2 actually felt too big for me when I was looking - now it may have been partly the wide bars (42cm if not 44cm, I use a 38cm) and a too long stem (I use a 100mm on a 54cm frame). I ended up with a Medium Avail, which I think has a shorter TT and taller head tube than the medium Defy, and a 90cm stem and 40cm bar (which I changed to a 38cm)

Look closely at the Geometries, see how they compare to other brands...oh and go test ride one ;)

I do have a Giant, it's large but quite old. I find I am equally comfortable on a med or large but it's a very personal thing. I am now gravitating towards the smaller size.

I feel sure you can book a test ride on a Giant from a Giant Dealer for the weekend, Think there is a charge but if you do buy it it's knocked off the price of the bike, maybe worth looking into to see if they still do it. I know Giant Dealers Rutland Water also do a 30 day exchange if the bike isn't right for you.

I'm s`11" tall and trouser length 30" or so.

M/L suits me fine but I did go & sit on them in the shop, and recommend you do that too.

Hope this helps !

I tried a defy when buying mine - I am 5' 8" and a bit with 31" inside leg - I was more comfy on the M/L - all the stats said I should really have the M but just shows you need to park your backside on one to really see.

I went for a Focus in the end - 56"

Thanks so far for the replies, I'm heading up to Giant North East (formerly Bicycle Repair Man in Prudhoe) to sit on a few

Tell me about it, I'm faced with other temptations such as the Wilier Iozard, Trek Domane 4.3, Forme Longcliffe 1.0, Felt z85 or Z6. The list goes on........and on

I have just bought a Defy. I am just about 5'11 with a 33.5 inside leg and went for the m/l. The medium was just too small for me, the seat post was virtually all the way out just so I could get my full leg extension on the pedals and I felt too cramped to the bars.

I'm 5'10" about 31 inside leg and i have a medium, i do prefer to be not stretched out in any way though. I've even reduced the stem length too.

5'10ish 32"inside leg, went for the M,seatpost is high but still could go up 50mm if it was needed, very comfortable for me and feel it is the right size for me....but best go and sit on a couple as you are doing anyway

5'8" and bought a Medium. Hubster was going to buy a M/L, he's 5'10 and a bit. He got seduced by a Boardman instead.
I changed my stem to an 80mm and I changed the bars to a pair of 42cm as I am of the female persuasion.
