Errrr.....
Worth highlighting the early start & finish for the unwary. Be in place for the Colle delle Finestre climb by 14:00.

4 times the Colle delle Finnestre has been climbed in the Giro and only once has the race action been less than brilliant.
Today’s course comes the closest to the one tackled in 2005, it’s inauguration. After the initial flat kms and 4th cat, it is identical in fact.

I'm hoping Del Toro holds on though Carapaz is an exciting rider and him returning to grand tour winning form after so many years would be a good story. I find it very hard to warm to Yates - apart from his riding being so conservative he's not a kid and his stonewalling every interview verges on disrespect to the media, fans and sport. When he said he'd rather not ride on gravel my reaction was well go home then.

Seems a huge stretch. His best result so far is 13th in the 2023 Tour, which sounds like he's knocking on the door of the top 10, but in reality, he was 47 minutes behind 1st place, and 21 minutes behind 10th.
Yes I thought one of the reasons he left Ineos was he felt he was more suited to one day races - missing the cobbled classics seemed a mistake but I assumed he was being used to get his team a Giro invite. He's shown nothing to suggest he can win a grand tour - he's experienced enough that talk of trial runs seems odd - how many trial runs has Del Toro had?

And he was 2 minutes down on the one stage of this year's race that was tailor-made for him. You kinda sense he's an overhyped version of Ben Healy.

Surprisingly, it looks as if we have our BOTD already.

From his interviews earlier in the race (about halfway), his aim is for a top ten here and it's a challenge for him because it's not very interesting and he's not racing to win. He's not really built entally for doing what e.g. Caruso has done this year (just sitting with the GC group as long as possible limiting losses). He loses concentration and motivation, so the challenge was to keep at it and see how far he could get up the standings. I think he feels he's not really tried that properly, partly because he's always had a bad day and given up, partly because when he's had a bad day Ineos have just switched focus to a different leader or to stage hunting.

I can't say I've seen any great breakthrough or that much potential to win a GT but maybe he just needs to fail under his own power to have the right context to give it up?

Not really - he's already won the ciclamino, just needs to finish the race. So it depends on whether he wants to annoy de Bondt or not - I think they've buried the hatchet now though

Except of course that Mads is actually leading the intermediate comp... I thought de Bondt was ahead.

I thought that the breakaway only scored points in that competition if there are less than 10 riders in the break?
I wasn’t referring to the intermediate comp.
Anyhow, the big group has now been caught by the even bigger group, so it’s moot.

Breakaway stage winner most likely now. Probably by one of the Zubeldia types hiding at the back.
